(Superior book about two all time greats.)
(The Competition Continues) Always an Arnie fan, reluctantly a Jack fan, Ian O'Connor has allowed me to go back to a wonderful time in my life. I cut school to watch these two men duel at Baltusrol. I remember seven kids jumping into the pond of the fourth green to recover a misplayed Palmer shot during the 67 US Open. Palmer's charisma has never been replicated, while Jack eventually earned the respect he deserved. Arnie and Jack reveals captivating insights into these two golfing warriors' lives and accomplishments. I had to send copies to my all my golfing buddies, even before Christmas Mr. O'Connor has done a fine job with his work on the Palmer-Nicklaus rivalry. No matter which side of the fence you may be on (Arnie's Army or Jack's Pack), there are enduring lessons to be learned here as well as a lot of inside information about two of the all time greats of the game so many of us love. If you have any memories of either of these guys in, or even close to, their primes, you can purchase this book with confidence knowing you have a wonderful read ahead of you. Fifty years ago, the greatest rivalry in golf began. By forty years ago, it was all over, with the domination of Jack Nicklaus over Arnold Palmer. So for those who didn't live through it (and for those who did), Mr. O'Connor chronicles the the rise of Big Golf with these two men. Mr. Palmer with his come from behind wins and self-taught style came of age with the TV set and was golf's first superstar. Mr. Nicklaus was not the risk-taker on the golf course that Mr. Palmer was --which is why Arnie had his "Army" and Jack had all the major championships. Their rivalry continued in the business arena after their golfing days. Mr. O'Connor interviewed everyone who knew them and used every cliche to describe them. Other than that, the book is fun to read and a joy to every golfer. Alternating from the golf course to the boardroom, the first account of the fifty-year duel that helped push golf to the heights and popularity it enjoys today.
Surprisingly, one of sport's most contentious, complex, and defining clashes played itself out not in the ring or at the scrimmage line but on the genteel green fairways of this country's finest courses. Arnie and Jack. Palmer and Nicklaus. Their decades-long rivalry propelled each to the status of American icon and helped transform a gentleman's game into a major American sport with a dedicated following.
Ian O'Connor explores the heated professional and personal battle between Palmer and Nicklaus in fascinating, intimate, and revelatory detail. Drawing on unique access to both players and having conducted more than 200 new interviews with everyone from family to fellow players to business associates right down to the caddies and clubhouse attendants, O'Connor illuminates their extreme differences and sprawling influences through mini-dramas, such as the 1962 U.S. Open, their years of alternating major victories like cards in a deck, their early involvement with marketing and a small agency called IMG, and their intense competition for golf course designs. By the end of this page-turning narrative that spans fifty remarkable years, we see that in the end each wanted what the other had: Arnold had the adoring fans but wanted the trophies. Jack had the trophies but wanted the love.We also learn that despite being bitter rivals they were also dear friends. (For golfer's only)
(Every Lover of Golf should read this history)
(The Match: The Day the Game of Golf Changed Forever)
(Great story of a great match) Mark Frost presents a wonderful golf story that is easily read. The reader will learn about some of the greatest golf legends of the twentieth century: Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Ken Venturi and Harvie Ward, who I had never heard of until reading this story.
Also of interest is the story of Cypress Point golf course, which Alister MacKenzie claimed to be one of his best designs.
There are a lot of books about golf, but this is one of the few that is worth reading. Good stuff! You won't be disappointed. It is a well written book for the hard core golf enthusiast. It is probably a book that a non golf fanatic would not enjoy. However, if you love the game this is an entertaining read. Well written and full of great detail on both history and individuals. Would recommend to anyone who loves the game or just loves sports. It is impossible to imagine any golfer not being absolutely thrilled with this book.
The description of the game makes you feel as if you are walking the course with the players and what players they were. A book for anyone who loves golf and its traditions. The conditions, the times and the principals will never converge again. At least we can savor the skillful retelling and wish that we could have been there to witness this singular event. customer 's review (Pain Free)
(Disappointed)
(Chi Running)
(Chi Running - great for a casual runner!)
(Chi Walking/Running) One reviewer wrote, "There is a lot of 'fluff' in this book to make it as long as it is," I totally agree, the book could be half as long, and still provide the great information on how to run pain free.
I've had knee pain for the past five years playing volleyball and running to stay in shape. I purchased this book per the reviews, followed the authors suggestions and WOW, I'm know pain free 95% of the time when I run or during moving activities. Your body tells you everything!
After reading the many positive reviews and endorsements for this book, I anticipated something more thorough and more polished. The book is highly repetitive (the same amount of material might easily have been covered in 40 pages), it lacks organization, the author invents words which have no meaning ("instate" as a verb, anyone?), and the typeset is HORRIBLE.
The author has some good ideas. Let's hear them.....coherently. I haven't completely implemented Chi Running but am headed in the right direction. Book is well written and easy to follow. I am really enjoying the book and it's goal of making running easier. Full disclosure: I took the workshop with Danny before I read the book. So my comments probably have less to do with the written presentation than with the technique itself.
I'm a casual runner - 4-6 miles, 3 days a week at most unless I'm training for a particular event. It's one of many things I do along with bicycling, aerobics, Pilates, strength training and kayaking. All my life I've been plagued with "overuse" (i.e. bad form) injuries - patellofemoral dysfunction, Achilles tendinitis, overpronation. With no other coaching than learning the Chi Running method, I no longer have to wear my patellofemoral straps and have no knee pain when I run. My Achilles are improving (more attention was required to my body mechanics in my other activities - but learning Chi Running helped me become aware of this as well). And I hope to someday wean myself off foot orthotics as other Chi Runners have done.
More importantly, Chi Running has made running feel good to me. Before, running was always a painful and rather unpleasant component to my cross-training, that I did because it was a cardio workout I could take with me wherever I travel. Now, I actually enjoy running, and I even competed in a 5K recently (and did rather well for being a very casual runner - top 20% in my age group and top third overall).
I think perhaps some of the critics are spending too much time thinking about the technique and not enough time feeling it in their body. I'm far from an accomplished Chi Runner, but it's really made a huge difference to me, and the more I refine my technique, the better it gets. Both Chi Walking&Chi Running have helped me immensely. I no longer have knee pain when I run and walking has felt almost effortless. The body sensing and relaxation techniques have helped so much even if I feel little twinges since the twinges go away. I highly recommend both books for anyone struggling with walking and running hang-ups. More than 24 million people run in the United States alone, but 65 percent will have to stop at least once this year because of injury. Still others will choose to run through the pain. But in this groundbreaking book, ultramarathoner Danny Dreyer teaches us the running technique he created to heal and prevent injuries and also to run faster, farther, and with much less effort at any age.
ChiRunning employs the deep power reserves in the core muscles of the trunk, an approach that grows out of such disciplines as yoga, Pilates, and t'ai chi. This excellent step-by-step program offers training principles and is easily learned.
Dramatically reduce your potential for injuryMake knee pain and shin splints a thing of the pastGreatly reduce post-run recovery timeCreate a safe and effective training program Make running any distance enjoyable whether you're a beginning runner or a seasoned competitor Rerations < ChiRunning > < Chi Walking: The Five Mindful Steps for Lifelong Health and Energy > < Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way To Swim Better, Faster, and Easier > < ChiRunning DVD: A Revolutionary Approach to Effortless, Injury-free Running > < Freestyle: Made Easy > freaks

customer 's review (Superb!)
(Excellent product)
(Visually appealing)
(In-Depth and a Great Deal)
(One of the best) This is a superb collection of instructions, tips and lessons. I have personally benefited by reading this and implementing at practice. I am a serious golfer with handicap index. When I read this book, I know this information inside is really good. Including everything you need to know about improving your golf swing. A great product. The book came along something I did not expect. Bonus DVD! Although it is not long in length, it gave me some a real insight into my swing. I cant really add a whole lot to what others have said about this book, but I will try.
All in all, this is an outstanding value (under $20) for what you get. This is, afterall, written by some of the Top 100 Golf Teachers in America. After reading through some of the contents I was having issues with in my game, I can honestly say I would still consider this a good deal @ $30- 40. Its just as complete a Game- Improvement book I've ever seen. And the drills they ask you to do arent rediculous. Most of them can be achieved around the house if you have a putting mat and/or hitting net.
I'm 'new' to golf (less than 1 year in) so I can only speak for beginners, but I would be shocked if I'm not referring to this book for the next 10 years. As a bonus, it will help me teach my children the game of golf. I'm really excited about that. I can do all the 'boring' reading (which its actually not boring at all), then take them out to the hitting net and teach the kids what I've learned. Great product. This book is not be read from cover to cover as you would a novel. Choose the section that highlights your weakness, and then check out the tips. Everything is laid out in clear pictures.
The tips are good and will help your game. Want simple tips to help smash it past your pals? Want to know how to generate the most power from your swing, put it close with irons, and stop three-putting? GOLF Magazine's Top 100 Teachers combine their knowledge to help you get your game back in shape with their first book, "The Best Instruction Book Ever!" This book would include the simple, direct and helpful tips that make the YOUR GAME section in GOLF Magazine the most popular part of the magazine. The book will be concentrated into different key areas: Driving, Iron Play, Chipping, Putting, Fault Fixes, Trouble Shots. Stunning photography from the world's best golf instruction photographers would give the book an extra edge in the marketplace as well as three dimensional diagrams which take instruction to a new level. customer 's review (Gripping story, sad ending)
(A beautifully written book!)
(An Inspiring and Heartbreaking Story)
(You've GOT to read this book!)
(A Powerful Story Of Life And Death) It was hard for me to read this book, knowing the sad ending. I'm nuts about animals, and stories about the death of one invariably makes me tear up. I read the ending of Good Dog. Stay., for example, with tears streaming down my face, although it was the story of an old dog that had lived a long and pampered life. Barbaro, on the other hand, dies in pain at the peak of his life.
Author Edgar Prado, Barbaro's jockey, tells this heartbreaking story with skill and compassion. From the moment Prado first sees Barbaro, he is impressed. "He wasn't a sleek and slender classic beauty. He was all jock."
Prado successfully petitions the owners to let him ride the big colt. After a thrilling win in the Kentucky Derby -- with the largest margin of victory since 1946 -- Barbaro is the favorite for the Preakness. But in this second leg of the Triple Crown, the horse sustains an injury, a terrible fracture. By quickly stopping Barbaro, Prado prevents the racehorse from damaging his leg further.
Although at first it seems to go well, the leg does not heal properly. At the end Barbaro is suffering and losing weight. The big horse is put down.
Prado includes 33 color photographs, most of them of Barbaro in his glory days, racing around a track. He seems to be flying, with his feet barely touching the ground. A shot of him the day before the Preakness shows Barbaro in his stall, reaching out his long neck and nuzzling the horse next door.
That one got to me. I cried. This is a beautifully written book. It must be very difficult for two people to collaborate on a book and come out with a single cohesive voice and style, but this book has that. Edgar Prado is a brilliant jockey and a fine man with a loving heart. This book conveys that and adds a unique new perspective to a remarkable story.
The first time he saw Barbaro, Edgar was riding another horse in the Laurel Futurity. As Barbaro broke away from the pack to win by eight lengths, Edgar says, "My horse had basically stopped running when he saw Barbaro pull away. I swore the sight had depressed him. But it had thrilled me. When you see a horse accelerate and finish like that,... you know you're seeing something special."
He describes his feelings after a phone call in which he and trainer Michael Matz agreed that Edgar would be Barbaro's new jockey: "I smiled as I hung up. I was being handed the keys to a Lamborghini."
Edgar talks about the significance of Barbaro starting out as a turf horse and switching later to dirt. Previously, Barbaro had been saddled on hard concrete floors in paddocks before racing on dirt tracks. However, preparations for the Preakness were different. "Now he was being saddled on grass, which excited him. He was a turf horse at heart,... He was never happier than when he was running on grass. The longer he stood on the grass, the more excited he became. He breathed harder. His muscles tensed. He was noticeably pumped up by the time I got on him." Barbaro was "agitated, impatient, a little too eager to get going" in the post parade. Edgar implies that this might have been a factor in the subsequent tragedy.
I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it, but I cannot give it a five-star rating. Throughout this book, Barbaro's magnificent groom, Eduardo Hernandez, is repeatedly and inexplicably called "Jose" (no last name). A quick Google during the book's editing process would have identified Eduardo so that he could have been properly acknowledged as the person who had given Barbaro such excellent and loving care. I just loved this book. It's incredibly moving without being overly sentimental. I read it for Barbaro's story, which didn't disappoint, but I was as fascinated by the details about a jockey's life. I recommend this book for horse racing fans but also for anyone who likes a good human (and animal) interest story. I thought I knew the whole story of Barbaro's short life. I had read every book, watched every news story, and seen every posting online. I ordered this book in August. over 7 months before it was released, based on a letter I heard read from Edgar Prado at a Delaware Park function. It was extremely articulate and full of emotion. By the time the book arrived 2 days ago, I wasn't sure I wanted to read it - it was an emotional story and I knew how badly it ended - but after the first chapter I couldn't put it down. It's extremely well written. I learned a lot about racing in general, but most of all, it told a side of the story I don't think any of us knew. Yes, it opened up old wounds, but it also made me remember what a truly remarkable animal Barbaro was - and this is a truly remarkable book. Thank you, Mr. Prado, for sharing your story with us. If I could give it 100 stars, I would - it's that good! This is a wonderful tribute to the life and death of a great champion from the jockey who guided him to tremendous victories and saved his life on that fateful day in May 2006.
Edgar Prado tells his story on how he got the opportunity to be the jockey of Barbaro and how the champion emerged as something very special in his life. Prado is especially candid on his personal feelings on the Preakness and covers every aspect of what was supposed to be another race on the track to immortality, but became - in a few seconds - a trek of life and death.
There are excerpts of letters sent to Prado from fans, which chronicle the outpouring of concern and grief for Barbaro. A powerful section is what was Prado's last visit with Barbaro at the The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine's New Bolton Center and how he was notified that the Thoroughbred lost his battle to defeat the long odds caused by mounting health problems.
This is a powerful recollection and is an absolute must for anyone who was touched by any aspect of Barbaro's story.
A new superstar appeared on the American sports landscape in the spring of 2006: Barbaro, a three-year-old racehorse, won the Kentucky Derby by six and a half lengths, the largest margin of victory in sixty years. Barbaro's impressive performance immediately stirred talk of a possible Triple Crown. But in the opening yards of the Preakness Stakes two weeks later, the horse suffered a catastrophic leg injury that ended his undefeated career and left him fighting for his life.
Edgar Prado, a native of Peru and one of the world's top jockeys, rode Barbaro to glory and then stood beside him for months as the horse valiantly struggled to survive and millions of fans held their breath. Having ridden in more than twenty-five thousand races over the previous two decades, Prado thought he had been around too long to fall for any one horse, but Barbaro—intelligent, charismatic, and resourceful in sickness as well as in health—stole his heart.
InMy Guy Barbaro, Prado recounts his own story, a tale of grit and dreams that moves from his impoverished childhood in Lima, Peru, to the winner's circles of the greatest racetracks in the world, and memorably chronicles his emotional time with Barbaro before, during, and after the horse's breakdown. Their bond was special and immeasurable. With Prado still reeling from a wrenching personal loss, Barbaro lifted his spirits by giving him“the ride of a lifetime” in the Derby. When the tables turned and the horse needed support two weeks later, Prado was there, going out of his way to make a succession of visits to the New Bolton Center, the animal hospital in Pennsylvania where Barbaro underwent more than two dozen surgeries and was ultimately put down.
Barbaro made worldwide headlines for eight months, and now Prado's poignant, clear-eyed narrative takes us where no reader has gone before—onto Barbaro's back in the heat of a race and into the intensive care suite where Barbaro's life-and-death drama played itself out.My Guy Barbarois a heartwarming, unforgettable story of a man and his love for a beautiful animal and an irreplaceable teammate. customer 's review (An absolute riveting memoir)
(It's Not About the Bike Journey Back to Life)
(It's not about the book.)
(Book report: It's about sheer determination, fighting against the odds)
(Motivational...and Inspiring!) The story of Lance Armstong's life up until 2001 will be a challenge to put down for even those who are not fans of cycling. This story unfolds as an enthralling voyage taken alongside one of the greatest athletes in history from his very low points facing apparent death by brain cancer to the high points of full recovery and winning the Tour de France.
Lance is extremely strong willed, bold, determined, and presents a story for the ages with his first autobiography. His story is so compelling that I highly recommend this book to anyone.
All the best.
X This is a great book for his fears, fight, hope and established interest in cancer. It is an inspirational story for those with cancer as well as their friends, for information and support. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it is a little bit about the bike, but it is an excellent book to give hope to those with cancer to be cured and survive. Don't get me wrong, this book is GREAT. But reading it in 2008 will give you the feeling the end is missing in this book. No Sheryl Crow and no seven tour victories. This book covers Lance's dealings with cancer and his bike up until his second tour victory.
What I really admire about this book is the way it has been written. No subjects are pushed to the back and the man Armstrong really comes forward. His battle with testicular cancer has been known throughout the world, but when you read about it in great detail you can actually grasp his battle for the first time.
This book can be a great gift. Ever catch a person whining about something trivial? Then make him humble by reading this book. Lance's book was an inspiration to read from the stand point of overcoming obstacles and also remembering to stay passionate about your work. In his book, Lance portrays himself as the quintessential underdog, fighting against great odds to become somebody important, a goal that would materialize in the form of winning the largest bicycle race in the world seven times -consecutively.
Lance seems to have the deck stacked against him with challenge after challenge in life. Each obstacle in itself seems like it'd be devastating to any normal person, but Lance tells how he used trials to build mental grit that would be required for the ultimate challenge -the Tour de France. He shows how he compartmentalized and attacked each problem using what he refers to as "a dumb focus", which is also the unique character trait that inevitably ushers Lance to the podium, stage after stage, and race after race.
As I read his book, I thought it should be called "Racing from behind", not only because Lance started from behind in life as he portrays, but also because that is how he likes it, -racing from behind. I really think Lance enjoys positioning himself behind the leaders, where the pressure is off, where he can observe, calculate, strategize and plan his swooping attack to the finish line. No matter what Lance is doing in life, he always has his mind focused on some sort of finish line; that's where the performance really counts. It's a philosophy that while very successful at leading to victories in the most popular bicycle race, probably isn't the best approach for life in general.
As enjoyable as it was to read about one of my personal heroes, it was sobering to realize that Lance is not as super human as I have made him out to be in my own mind. I will like to see a more complete picture of Lance Armstrong written at a later date reflecting a well rounded character, a little closer to the super human image I have built up of him.
I thoroughly enjoyed this, yet i am not an athlete, nor do i know much about the sport of bikes. Cancer is the devil, and Lance doesn't back away from the ugliness of it.Yet, he survived it,and you can to.
I have given this to 2 friends who had life threatening illnesses, and both said they loved it. Be good to yourself, and think positively! I think we can all benefit from that. People around the world have found inspiration in the story of Lance Armstrong--a world-class athlete nearly struck down by cancer, only to recover and win the Tour de France, the multiday bicycle race famous for its grueling intensity. Armstrong is a thoroughgoing Texan jock, and the changes brought to his life by his illness are startling and powerful, but he's just not interested in wearing a hero suit. While his vocabulary is a bit on the he-man side (highest compliment to his wife: "she's a stud"), his actions will melt the most hard-bitten souls: a cancer foundation and benefit bike ride, his astonishing commitment to training that got him past countless hurdles, loyalty to the people and corporations that never gave up on him. There's serious medical detail here, which may not be for the faint of heart; from chemo to surgical procedures to his wife's in vitro fertilization, you won't be spared a single x-ray, IV drip, or unfortunate side effect. Athletes and coaches everywhere will benefit from the same extraordinary detail provided about his training sessions--every aching tendon, every rainy afternoon, and every small triumph during his long recovery is here in living color. It's Not About the Bikeis the perfect title for this book about life, death, illness, family, setbacks, and triumphs, but not especially about the bike.--Jill Lightner The #1New York Timesbestseller with legs as strong as its author's.
Lance Armstrong is one of the most talked about- and inspirational-sports figures of all time. He wasSports Illustrated's 2002 Sportsman of the Year-and now, after his record-shattering string of Tour de France victories, some are proclaiming him the greatest athlete of all time.
This is the book in which he shares his journey through triumph, tragedy, transformation, and transcendence. It is the story of a world-famous cyclist and his fight against cancer.

customer 's review (Buy it!)
(Great for Intermediate/Advanced triathletes)
(a must)
(Triathlon Bible)
(The best. Period.) Buy this book! If you are a Triathlete, novice or Elite, this book will help you to train smart and reach your goals! Period. I am an exercise scientist, and triathlete, and this is the best book on periodizing triathlon workouts that I have come across. It is very detailed, so is more geared toward intermediate to advanced athletes. If you are looking for good strength training workouts, though, this book does not have that. The strength training in here is very generic, not tri specific. All triathletes should begin here. Even if you have lots of experience, you should own this book. Everything you need to know, every question you might have, this book will guide you in the right direction. Even after 6 years of racing, and 5 Ironmans, I still refer to it. Very detailed training instructions for the novice to the expert...almost "too much" detail if you are just getting started. But, I really like that the author provides volumes of information based on solid training principles. If you like data and theory, you'll love this book.
In my opinion, the goal of this book is to give people who want to compete in triathalons a scientific, self-coached training plan. Does it deliver? Absolutely. The book accomplishes this through six, cleanly divided parts.
Part one, "The self-trained triathlete" is concerned with the "philosophical" basis for methodical training. It deals with things such as attitide and commitment, which are as important to me as the physical training.
Part two, "From lab to real world" talks about the scientific foundation of training and goes into the science and priciples of training (i.e. progressive resistance, periodization, etc.).
Part three, "Training with a purpose" seems to pull together parts one and two in which a system of purposeful training is described. This part will help the reader to determine exactly what their training needs are and the best ways to address them.
Part four, simply titled "Planning" is really the heart of the book. Here the book helps you design your own training plan for a season, week by week.
Part five, "Racing and recovering" takes you through the many details of preparing to race and recovering after. In other words, it gives you info on what to do before and after the actual race. This information is essential as many athletes neglect to recover properly before starting training again for the next race.
Part six, "The competative edge" talks about other supplemental aspects of training that can contribute to peak performance. Here the book covers things such as swimming tips, weight training ex's, eating tips, keeping a training diary, etc. I like to think of this chapter as a kind of "tie up the loose ends" section.
Truly a book that lives up to its name, I can't see many readers coming away from this book without picking up much useful information- from the beginner to the experienced. Athletes who have shoulder trouble that interferes with their training might also find Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff helpful too. Happy training!

Having over ten years of experience in the field of strength and conditioning and over twenty years in martial arts I can honestly say you are not going to find a more comprehensive and practical book. I consider this book, as absolutely essential for anybody serious about strength training. I use this book as a resource daily and strongly recommend it. I've been reading Martin Rooney's stuff for years and this new book is his best product yet for sure. Not only is the information for everyone out there looking to inprove their fitness, but the pictures are amazing. If you are a serious athlete or just looking for a new routine for the gym you will buy this book. Over the years I have spent lots of dough on videos and other books, but this one by far is the most comprehensive and easy to follow of them all. The only limitation is that it looks like a book just for fighters, but this book is really for everyone. I hope this review will help people understand that. Martin is a genius. I have had the pleasure of being able to train with him and he is one of the top minds in the field of strength and conditioning. The man is an Olympic athlete. He has trained numerous players for the NFL combine. He has trained a Pancrase champion(Ricardo Almeida). He has also trained a team to a world championship (Renzo Gracie's IFL Pitbulls).
This book has a ton of knowledge for any aspiring combat athlete. Conditioning routines, nutritional plans, are all mapped out in this book. Pictorials and descriptions for the exercises are also included. This book is a must!!!
I have a school with over 200 students. I also train fighters for MMA competition. I have used these techniques with my students with much success. I have had one world champion in the Ring of Combat organization. I have also had competitors in the UFC, WEC, ShowXC, Bodog Fight, Ringo of Combat, HD Net fights... Martin's techniques have worked for us. Let them work for you. If you have ever even thought of training- get this book. The content is top notch with instruction on everything you need to compete in the full spectrum style of a pro fighter. The author really delivers in his effort to provide insight and direction on all the various aspects of contemporary training. He gives you workouts, diet, destroying opponents... its all in the book. The images are inspirational, the workouts are comprehensive and the language is delivered in a manner that is both easy to digest and functional to follow. Whether you are trying to stay competitive, get competitive, or just reach your potential this is NEED TO KNOW INFORMATION. The great thing about this book is that it can be used by non-fighters who are looking for a complete workout program. Any athlete looking to raise their levels of strength and conditioning should use this book as a guide.

customer 's review (Best book ever for teachers of every sort)
(Inner Energy for sucess)
(A philosophy for tennis)
(Know Your "Selves" Better)
(Great book!) This book is more useful than almost anything I have read. It makes all of life easier and better. I use the techniques in the book to help myself and my music students. It contains the best method I know of to achieve excellence in any skill. Every of us has problems when he stay alone. Like tennis player who has to fight agains his opponent, audience, sometimes referees, and of course, agains his the greatest "enemy" - himself.
When we are alone, in similar mental situations, like tennis players are, we have to match the pattern how to win. Excellent approach to everyday situations. As an educational psychology doctoral candidate, I can say with confidence that this book, though written 25 years ago, was well ahead of its time then, and it still is today. Major principles of self-talk, relaxation, and imagery used in todays sport psychology are introduced in a manner which is understandable to the reader. Much of my philosophy for teaching tennis and sport psychology consulting is based on the ideas presented in this book. As most people can guess by the title, the "inner game" of tennis is the game that takes place iin the mind of the player and is played against barriers such as nervousness, self-doubt, etc.
To gain clarity on the mental problems in tennis, the book looks at the concepts of "Self 1" and "Self 2". Self 1 is the name that is given to the conscious ego-mind which likes the tell Self 2, you and your potential, how to hit the ball and play the game. Or, to put it another way, Self 1 is the "teller" and Self 2 the "doer". I found this to be an interesting idea, as we have all caught ourselves talking to ourselves or have seen others talking to themselves during a game. If you ask someone who they are talking to, they will usually say "I'm talking to myself." This, of course, implies that there are 2 "selves", "I" and "myself"- and so is born the idea of Self 1 and Self 2. Pretty astutue observation in my opinion.
Now according to the book, to achieve peak performance, the key is to resolve any lack of harmony between the two selves, as it is the contrary thinking of Self 1 which causes interference with the natural abilities of Self 2. This requires the learning of several inner skills, such as the art of letting go of self-judgements, letting Self 2 do the hitting, recognizing and trusting the natural learning process, and so on- which is what much of the books spends discussing.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who plays tennis (or any other sport for that matter) as it does a great job in dealing with the fact that many of our difficulties in tennis are indeed mental in origin. Other helpful books for tennis players I've come across include Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff. I think this is a great read and an interesting approach to tennis. A must have for professionals, amateurs and coaches alike. Bringing meditation and tennis together. A phenomenon when first published in 1972, theInner Gamewas a real revelation. Instead of serving up technique, it concentrated on the fact that, as Gallwey wrote, "Every game is composed of two parts, an outer game and an inner game." The former is played against opponents, and is filled with lots of contradictory advice; the latter is played not against, but within the mind of the player, and its principal obstacles are self-doubt and anxiety. Gallwey's revolutionary thinking, built on a foundation of Zen thinking and humanistic psychology, was really a primer on how to get out of your own way to let your best game emerge. It was sports psychology before the two words were pressed against each other and codified into an accepted discipline.
The new edition of this remarkable work--Billie Jean King called the original her tennis bible--refines Gallwey's theories on concentration, gamesmanship, breaking bad habits, learning to trust yourself on the court, and awareness. "No matter what a person's complaint when he has a lesson with me, I have found the most beneficial first step," he stressed, "is to encourage him toseeandfeelwhat he is doing--that is, to increase his awareness ofwhat actually is."
There are aspects of psychobabble and mysticism to be found here, sure, but Gallwey instructs as much by anecdote as anything else, and time has ultimately proved him a guru. What seemed radical in the early '70s is now accepted ammunition for the canon; the right mental approach is every bit as important as a good backhand. The Inner Game of Tennisstill does much to keep that idea in play.--Jeff Silverman The Inner Game of Tennis is a revolutionary program for overcoming the self-doubt, nervousness, and lapses of concentration that can keep a player from winning. Now available in a revised paperback edition, this classic bestseller can change the way the game of tennis is played. customer 's review (I am a Marathoner!)
(Very Good Book)
(Marathon Training)
(Great Book)
(The title say's it all!) I decided to run a marathon, but did not think I could do it. I am an avid amazon dreamer. My wish list is too long to mention! While searching for help I came across this book. I am so glad I did. This book gives you all the tools you need to complete a marathon and helps you built your self-esteem to let you know you can! Go for it! I bought this book accidentally... and I gave it to my husband. He said he likes the book so much. It gives him a lot of idea on how to run in a marathon! ;) This is the ultimate marathon training book!!! And it's the 3rd one I've ordered. My friend swore by this book when she was training for the Tokyo Marathon such as I did when I trained for the Marine Corps Marathon. Amazon got the book here quick too!! My sister-in-law and I are training to run a half marathon. This book is like our bible. We are following the training advice to a tee and really enjoying the workouts. I am highly recommending this book to anyone who isn't a runner and is training for a marathon. We both love this book and know that we will be successful when it comes time to run the marathon thanks to this book! I just completed my first marathon (Rome 3-16-08). This book gave me all I needed to train and complete this marathon. I started from not being able to run for 30 minutes straight to running a marathon within 6 months. If you follow this book you will be able to train for and run a marathon!
The writers are very motivational. There is a 16 week program that guides you through your training week by week. I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone who has ever wanted to run a marathon! Athlete. Runner. Marathoner. Are these words you wouldn't exactly use to describe yourself? Do you consider yourself too old or too out of shape to run a marathon? But somewhere deep inside have you always admired the people who could reach down and come up with the mental and physical strength to complete such a daunting and rewarding accomplishment? It doesn't have to be somebody else crossing the finish line. You can be a marathoner. The Non-Runner's Marathon Traineris based on the highly successful marathon class offered by the University of Northern Iowa, which was featured in aRunner's Worldarticle titled "Marathoning 101." The class has been offered five times over 10 years, and all but one student finished the marathon. That is approximately 200 students -- all first time marathoners and many with absolutely no running background. This book follows the same 16-week, four-day-a-week workout plan. What makes the success rate of this program so much higher than any other? The special emphasis on the psychological aspects of endurance activities. You don't have to love to run -- you don't even have to like it -- but you have to realize that you are capable of more than you have ever thought possible. One participant in the program explained it like this: "I'm doing this for me -- not for others or the time clock. I just feel better when I run, plus it helps me to cope with things in general. The skills we've learned in this class don't apply just to marathoning -- they apply to life! Just like you never know what the next step in a marathon will bring, so too, you never know what will happen next in life. But if you don't keep going, you're never going to find out. By staying relaxed, centered, and positive you handle just about anything that comes your way." This is marathon running for real people, people with jobs and families and obligations outside of running. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainerhas proven successful for men and women of all ages. Now let it work for you.
