My husband is a Navy SEAL, and we have lost a lot of friends in the war. My husband and I both agree that if he dies in combat, his funeral song will be "Prayer to St. Peter". I hope we never have to use it for that purpose. The 1990s music landscape saw Alternative Rock begin to basically become part of the mainstream music fold. However, Alternative Rock also began to produce many other off-shoots. This was because there was a perception that groups such as "Nirvana" and "Gin Blossoms" would "sell out" to commercial culture. As a result, a sub-movement within Alternative Rock began to form called "Indie Rock". The "Indie" stands for independent. It is a style of music that often covers a wide variety of genres, often working on independent record labels, but most importantly the artist maintains complete control of the music and their careers. However as Indie Rock stars gained popularity, even this term began to blur a bit. One artist who rose to popularity in the Indie Rock movement was Edwin McCain. Edwin McCain's second album "Misguided Roses" produced one of the biggest hits of 1997 and 1998 called "I'll Be". While I always felt that this was an overrated song, it did give McCain's career the boost it needed. While McCain's commercial success might have put his "Indie Rock" status in question, his style would still remain true to the "Indie Rock" roots. It would be McCain's third album, "Messenger" that would show his "Indie Rock" roots. Surprisingly, this album didn't garner the critical acclaim that I would have expected. As mentioned, a key facet to the "Indie Rock" movement is maintaining complete control of the music - in other words, doing things your own way. For the most part, with McCain, this is not an issue. The sound on "Messenger" by McCain is as "Coffee House" as you can get. There is a lot of use of acoustic (even if it is electric acoustic) guitars. McCain supplements this sound very nicely with the use of saxophones and horns. He also makes a stronger use of drums and percussions than most "Coffee House" style artists. McCain is also one very talented songwriter. As for doing things "his own way", this is very evident on "Messenger". McCain penned 11 of the 12 tracks. One might give him some criticism for using a song ("I Could Not Ask For More") written by a very "commercial songwriter" like Diane Warren, but McCain puts his own spin on that track. After all, part of Indie Rock is doing things your own way - and that is very evident on that track. McCain's songwriting includes a wide variety of topics. Most notably, McCain's spirituality surfaces in the song "A Prayer to St. Peter". This is an acoustic sounding song that I'm shocked didn't garner more attention on the Christian Contemporary circuit. While McCain does include other spiritual/religious references on "Messenger" (such as "Ghost of Jackson Square", "Sign on the Door", "Beautiful Life", and even on Warren's "I Could Not Ask For More"). I would say it's safe to say that McCain is a Christian influenced musician. McCain also sings on other topics - such as a tribute to his grandmother ("See Off This Mountain"); Alcoholism ("Sign on the Door" and "Go Be Young"); and of course love and romance ("Wish In This World", "Promise of You", I'll Be") As far as McCain's songwriting goes, it is his use of metaphors that really hits home. While I did feel "I'll Be" was an overrated song, this was a song that did use metaphors very well (i.e. "Emeralds from mountains thrust from the sky", "Rain falls angry on the tin roof"). McCain carries this trademark over to "Messenger". This is seen on several tracks such as: "Wish in this World" ("Running to grass so green; Dangerous road, but it's not going to change"); "Ghost of Jackson Square" ("But fall from the height; my personal ledges; afraid to look down; my crepe paper bridges; enough water to drawn"); "Prayer to St. Peter" ("The taste of summer; and a ripened pear; and girls sweet as meadow wind"); and Sign on the Door ("With a Sign on the Door; Saying sorry we're closed"). Throughout the album, the balance between McCain's haunting vocals and the outstanding work done by his band are really done well. There isn't a bad track on this collection. Perhaps the best example of the balance between the vocals and band work is on "Go Be Young". This song got a lot of airplay and deserved it - it is the best track on the album. "I Could Not Ask for More" also get some attention as well - and also well deserved. There are many other tracks that I'm surprised didn't garner more airplay or attention - such as "Wish In This World", "Beautiful Life", "Prayer to St. Peter", "Ghosts of Jackson Square", and "Do Your Thing". "Sign on the Door" is another standout track that takes on almost a gospel-like feel toward the end of the track. My only criticism of "Messenger" is the inclusion of the "acoustic" version "I'll Be". I almost feel that this was included to capitalize on the big success of "I'll Be". Ok, it was a popular song and there may be a market to hear a more "acoustic" sound, but I think this would have been better suited for a greatest hits album. I had mentioned that McCain did things his own way "for the most part". Perhaps the record company put some pressure to include this. While you can say this violates the spirit of the Indie Rock movement, you can also say that perhaps McCain wanted to include this - and did things his own way. The liner notes contain all of the lyrics to all of the songs as well as the musician and production credits. While "Messenger" would be a commercial success, that would be the last album that McCain would have commercial success. McCain would return to his Indie roots of touring and word of mouth music. But "Messenger" proved that Indie Music can be good even it does sell well. Highly recommended. This is simply one of my top 20 favorite CD's of all-time. I'm 40 years old, and have heard a lot of 'albums' and trust me, this one is right in there. If you like Edwin at all, you will love this album. This is one of my very favorite cds. By far the best by Edwin McCain, and among the best albums I've ever heard. Buy it. Get an extra copy for a friend. Edwin Mcwinain. what can I say about him? I'm 17 years old and when I went to a concert of his, because his following is not all that large (what a shame) most people were surprised to see a person so young, there. they asked me how I knew about him. I said that I had heard him on the show"Dawson's Creek"a few years before and fell in love with his music. I have this CD ("Messenger") and I highly recommend it. Edwin's lyrics are so beautiful and meaninful and his voice is sooo sooothing. Edwin has that great combo of Pop, Blues, Jazz, Country and Rock, ALL INTO ONE! it's hard to explain but I love it. I met him once a few months ago and I'm going to see him again next week. Edwin McCain struck gold with his 1997 release,Misguided Roses, which sold half a million copies and spawned theDawson's Creek-driven hit single "I'll Be," so he's probably earned the right to think big. That's what he does onMessenger, attacking his new set of songs with fleshed-out arrangements, several of which involve string sections and horns. Fans of McCain's more stripped-down fare will be disappointed by his rather bold-faced move toward the middle of the road, the most egregious example being the Diane Warren-penned ballad "I Could Not Ask for More," which is typically syrupy and overwrought. McCain's acoustic-driven "Ghosts of Jackson Square" is more on target, as is the soulful "Wish on the World" and the bouncy "Beautiful Life." Fans of "I'll Be" will enjoy hearing it again here, this time in a hushed vocals-guitar-sax version that's even more direct and affecting than the original.--Daniel Durchholz Rerations < Messenger [ENHANCED CD] > < Misguided Roses > < Honor Among Thieves > < Far From Over > < Lost in America > freaks < Stand By Me: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack > < Stand By Me (Special Edition) > < 41 Original Hits From The Soundtrack Of American Graffiti > < Now And Then: Music From The Motion Picture > < Mermaids: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack > < Dirty Dancing: Original Soundtrack From The Vestron Motion Picture > price:Atlantic / Wea(1990-10-25) Usually ships in 24 hours 1.Everyday - Buddy Holly 2.Let The Good Times Roll - Shirley/Lee 3.Come Go With Me - Del Vikings 4.Whispering Bells - Del Vikings 5.Get A Job - Silhouettes 6.Lollipop - Chordettes 7.:Yakety Yak - COASTERS 8.Great Balls Of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis 9.Mr. Lee - Bobbettes 10.Stand By Me - Ben E. I listened to this soundtrack in a friend's car a couple times on a trip. The music was great! I can't wait until I buy myself the CD. This soundtrack is easily one of the most timeless you will ever hear. From the Chordettes and "Lollipop" to Shirley and Lee "Let The Good Times Roll". This music takes you back to those warm summer nights, whether you are 12 or 62. Stand By Me is a true coming of age story, and these songs will remind you of that magical time in your life. Don't pass this one up! I loved that movie Stand By Me when I was a kid, as I was the same age as the boys in this movie and felt like I too was going on sort of a "spiritual journey" with them in the course of the movie. Years later seeing it, well, it's not the same. I've lost my innocence since then and it doesn't have the same magic it used to. The soundtrack, however, will always live in my heart. I had never heard of any of the artists, let alone the songs, which this wonderful soundtrack included. I began to explore a world out there that I didn't know existed, the world of the past and who all these great rock n' rollers were. This soundtrack, as well as The Lost Boys soundtrack, helped mold and shape me into who I am today. For this I will always be greatful. A dandy of a soundtrack filled with a set of 10 songs from the era of Cadillac's and corner malt shops. It surprised a lot of people who saw the movie and bought the soundtrack that Elvis, with his fun bop or sweet croonin' would be exempt from this beauty. The stars here more than make up for his absence. The maverick of early rock, Buddy Holly, makes an appearence with his sweet"Everyday". The Del Vikings get the snappy"Come Go With Me"goin', and then smile all around with"Whispering Bells". My cousin, brother and I can't get enough of The Chordettes and"Lollipop". You gotta admit that the disc does come to an end pretty quick, and 50's tunes are usually two minutes (plus) long. At least the plate is loaded with a small but yummy helping, including the classic"Stand By Me"and The Coasters'"Yakety Yak". Though it's time limit is nowhere near the best innocence era soundtrack of them all,"American Grafitti", it would be just as good if it somehow had the same running time. This is one of those soundtracks that may have worked better during the vinyl era. Most of the tunes here (each and every one a '50s rock classic) are likely already in the CD collections of fans of this kind of music. That's probably the case with Buddy Holly, Ben E. King, the Del Vikings (two cuts here), the Coasters, Jerry Lee Lewis, and perhaps Shirley&Lee. It's probably not true of the Chordettes' "Lollipop," but that tune is used to such great effect in this terrific flick that you may just want to watch the video again. You can't go wrong with 10 feel-good classics.--Bill Holdship Rerations < Stand By Me: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack > < Stand By Me (Special Edition) > < 41 Original Hits From The Soundtrack Of American Graffiti > < Now And Then: Music From The Motion Picture > < Mermaids: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack > freaks < Back to the Future > < Back to Future 2 > < Back to the Future Part III > < The Karate Kid (Special Edition) > < Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (Special Edition) > < E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial (Widescreen Edition) > price:Universal Home Video(1989-09-14) customer 's review (Back To The Future) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (I Love This Movie!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Weird science and mad scientists in action!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (BTTF) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (A classic) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Have you ever wanted to travel through time? To see the future? To witness historic events? Marty McFy(Michael J. Fox) finds hinself facing this when his friend "Doc" Emmett L. Brown(Christopher Lloyd) builds a time machine. Marty is accidentally sent back to 1955 (from 1985) ( he's only 17, so he hasn't been born yet) and disrupts his parents'(Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover) first meeting. On top of that, he might be stuck in 1955 because there isn't much plutonium around yet, and that's what makes the car a time machine. The actors do a great job of combining reality and science fiction to make my favorite movie. Do not show to young children who do not know cussing is wrong, as charactars swear freely. I've watched this movie at least 20 times by now and never seem to get tired of it. Michael Fox reacts perfectly to the travel back in time scenario. Watch him squirm when he realizes the 1950s girl making eyes at him is his mom-to-be in 1985. Christopher Lloyd is a comic genius whose body language and facial expressions will have you in stitches. As a nutty professor type trying to invent a time travel machine (and succeeding), he is also perfect for this film. The headlong pacing, plus the humorous and inventive situations make this a fun movie for the whole family. Exciting action/scifi movie with all the standard attributes: car chasings, gun fire, fist fights.... The movie authors ridiculize the great scientist Einstien, by naming the a dog after him, and having a main charcter whose hairstyle is like Einstein's. The plot is about timetravel back and forth to the past (1955) and present (1985). A high school scateboarding student and his older friend, the "Doc" have adventures while travelling to the past and present. Of course, in real life this is not possible. As long as you don't object to the impossible time travel, the rest of the movie is entertaining and energizing. The music is dynamic... A hard rock song ("The power of love") is the main theme. And there is nice jazzy muzic, when they reach 1955. The time travel is accomplished by using a remote-controlled car. There are some hidden commercials of Pepsi and Calvin Klein. All in all, it's a very well done movie! Over the course of our lives, we see things change, just as it is portrayed in the movie, so the movie makes sense to me. Actually, I have done some time travelling myself as well. I left my country and came back 10 years later. Boy, how different it looked! So I can almost identify with the movie's plot. That's why I give it a full 5 stars rating and two thumbs up! BACK TO THE FUTURE this experience is as good a movie now, as it was in 1985. back to the future is a rewarding family experience that combines learning about technology and science "no this sucker is electrical, but I need a nuclear reaction to generate the 1.21 gigawatts for the time distortion field", family values "marty you have got to save your father now, or else he will be ERASED! , erased from existence....." and a fun time into one great experience. If you go to film school, teach those academic idiots a lesson about real filmmaking and talk about back to the future... Filmmaking is NOT an academic exercise, its an experience... yo have to live it, and walk the walk to be a part of it... michael, los angeles, california If a film is not there to have a good time, what the hell is it for????? Okay so maybe it's not a classic...but I think that it should be. This is a very well written script that stands the test of time. Watching this film on cable yesterday, the movie doesn't once fall into the campy column. I can't say the same for the rest of the series. To tell you the truth I think that they should have stopped at the one movie. But still, this movie has everything, laughs, lite-suspense, and just an all around good, clean family fun. Dr. Emmett Brown: Then tell me, "future boy," who is president in the United States in 1985? Marty McFly: Ronald Reagan. Dr. Brown: Ronald Reagan? The actor?! Who's vice president? Jerry Lewis? Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis topped his breakaway hitRomancing the Stonewith this joyous comedy with a dazzling hook: what would it be like to meet your parents in their youth? Billed as a special-effects comedy, the imaginative film (the top box-office smash of 1985) has staying power because of the heart behind Zemeckis and Bob Gale's script. High schooler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox, during the height of his TV success) is catapulted back to the '50s where he sees his parents in their teens, and accidentally changes the history of how Mom and Dad met. Filled with the humorous ideology of the '50s, filtered through the knowledge of the '80s (actor Ronald Reagan is president, ha!), the film comes off as aTwilight Zoneepisode written by Preston Sturges. Filled with memorable effects and two wonderfully off-key, perfectly cast performances: Christopher Lloyd as the crazy scientist who builds the time machine (a DeLorean luxury car) and Crispin Glover as Marty's geeky dad. (Movie Review-"It Takes Two")

i think the first time i saw this was a late night movie on tv.i've seen it several times, from rental stores.but now it seems harder to find.no one carries many 80's movies in their stores.i love this movie,it's corky,adventure-like,and comedic drama keeps you watching.wondering until the end which woman he wants.
Kimberly Foster is absolutely gorgeous!
My favorite scenes where Jonni The Auto sales Lady
Shows off her Stocking&Garter tops. ( One scene where she staghtens her Garter belt in a car&the second scene where
she shows off her Black Stocking&garter tops while dancing at
a Tavern.)
This is a campy, hilarious, light-hearted and completely quotable movie. Having watched it countless times (I've had to replace it twice) it never fails to entertain. The story line is simple, but it certainly has all the makings of a classic comedy/romance - not to mention some pretty dynamic cars. The characters are believeable, and the dialogue isn't too contrived. You really get involved in what's happening throughout the movie. Also, the dream sequence following the Tijuana Torpedo is HILARIOUS.
I have seen the movie 4 times and i myself thought the movie carried a really neat plot. i have been trying to find out what type of Lamborgini they used in the movie, cause i am interested in buying one with the similar body style and in an apple red color. any information you could help supply with me as far as what type of Lamborgini they used in the movie will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Paul

(Kenny Loggins, Kevin Bacon, high school mayhem, oh yeah!)

Footloose" is a fun and very lighthearted motion picture that promises a good time and delivers.
The film has a simple, if unlikely, plotline. Streetsmart but gentle teenager Ren MacCormack(Kevin Bacon) arrives from the big city with his mother in the backwater town of Bomont. Enrolling at the local high school, he is appalled to discover the town's adults have imposed a law on "public dancing" and rock music, as enforced and practiced by the local preacher(John Lithgow). Ren quickly sets about changing things, falling in love with the preacher's daughter Ariel (Lori Singer) in the process.
The story is a little unlikely yet it is perfectly suitable for the teenaged audience at which it is pitched. The script takes some time to explore its simple theme - dancing and rock music, and what they symbolise for young people. Three scenes help to lay this out. The first sees Ren dancing by himself in a barn; the town meeting where Ren presents his case to the townspeople and explains to them the meaning of the dance; and the final prom sequence in which the teens of Bomont revel in their newfound liberation.
As the leading man, Kevin Bacon carries off his role very well. Ren isn't really a macho hero revelling in coolness, he's a down-to-earth young man trying to the right thing by his peers. His romance with Lori Singer's character Ariel is formulaic but perfectly inoffensive.
The film could have perhaps done with a little more nastiness to fully contrast against Ren's earnest intentions. Even Ariel's brutish boyfriend(Jim Young) fails to inject much tension in this respect and the final fistfight between him and Ren comes across as being a bit lame.
John Lithgow's characterisation is very good but it is a little too subtle. As the town Reverend and preacher of all things pure and holy, his extreme views come across not so much as puritanical, just merely uptight. The change that eventually occurs in his attitudes is hinted at very early on. The result is that he is nowhere near is frightening or intimidating a character as he could have been. At the same time his troubled relationships with his rebellious daughter and quiet wife(Dianne Wiest) are very well written and acted. In these scenes he excels and his character's development seems very natural.
On the technical side, the film is well-shot and the gloriously Eighties soundtrack complements the proceedings very well, bringing the necessary exhuberance and bounce to the whole movie.
Whilst "Footloose" is certainly no masterpiece, it succeeds in being a lighthearted knockabout caper, and as such is a very enjoyable movie.
Good movie overall, in my opinion. The way it was made is most of the appeal (music written for the plot), but the plot resonates too. There are a lot of religious people who act like the people in this town, trying to keep bad things from ever happening. But being straight-laced comes way too close to straight-jacketed here, and in a fairly stereotypical way. They could've used a little more balance in the religious things, but for the purposes of the story it isn't that far from usual.
The kids don't realize it in the movie, but the reason parents are hesitant to allow complete freedom such as teens desire is proved by their own actions here. In the movie dumb things happen and no one gets hurt, but in reality it is much less certain.
Nevertheless there is much to like about Footloose. The special features are nice to watch and very instructive also, with an interesting back story.
This movie makes me feel happy. I don't dance like Kevin, but I can dream!
Awasome movie, young people thirsty for some fun in a town dominated by religios fanatics, Kevin bacon is great, Sara jesica Parker is just a kid is this movie,.. they lived in a town where dancing in not allowed,..and what about the music, it's all Great!
More than just an 80's teen movie, Footloose is a film that just gets it all done. Okay sure you have the classic scene that takes forever when K-Bacon is running around a giant warehouse like spider man, but it is more! So much more people, these kids you see they are in this town that outlaws dancing. The kids want to have a prom and then this guy that K-Bacon plays, well he blows in from like, Chicago or somewhere. Now this was filmed in some small mill town in Utah but in the movie I do not recall them saying what state this is in. Anyways it does not matter, cuz K-bake is a threat because he is an outsider and different and is into expression. So it is really about how dancing is expression. So K-Bake kicks but all the way around. The scene at the meeting where the girl actually quotes from the bible about how they "celebrated and danced" is totally awesome (no 80's pun intended) because dude the strict do-gooders in the film are hearing this in the town meeting or whatever and they about have a friggin hernia! Heads almost explode, yeah! Just a fine movie and K-Bacon steals the show! And yes, 20 years later he would go on to be in Stir of Echoes and spend half a movie digging his backyard up with a shovel.
Director Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) pulled a winning movie out of this almost self-consciously archetypal tale of teenage rock rebellion. Kevin Bacon stars as a hip city kid who ends up in a Bible-belt town after his parents divorce. An ill fit for a conservative community where rock is frowned upon and dancing is forbidden, Bacon's character rallies the kids and takes on the establishment. Between a good cast really embracing the drama of Dean Pitchford's screenplay, and Ross's imaginative, highly charged way of shooting the dance numbers, you can get lost in this all-ages confection, and you won't even mind Kenny Loggins's bubbly pop. Bonuses include one of John Lithgow's best performances (a bit reminiscent of Jimmy Stewart), and Christopher Penn (who sure doesn't look the same anymore) as a good-natured hick who learns to boogie.--Tom Keogh
