The trend in contemporary horror films to show all the blood and guts doesn't frighten me, just nausiates me. I think there is a difference between suspense and nausea, and film makers need to learn the difference again. The movie has a cruel tone, which starts at the beginning when a father and sun have aleins burst out of their chest in a rather unsympathetic way. The cruelty doesn' stop and culmintates with a grotesque scene in a materiny ward. The wooden actors of the small town are so annoying I was rooting for the aleins to eat them. The Predator anit-hero has no redeeming qualities as it exhibits no compassion and is just fixated on destroying everything in it's path. If you like the early Alein movies spare yourself this film, if you like blood and gore knock yourself out. . . I cant tell if I liked this movie or not. Why?? Because I can't see enough of it. This movie is dark, and I don't mean in theame or in a noir style, but dark as in badly lit. I never get to really see any of the creature's production values because they are seemingly just silhouettes. I got so frustrated watching this movie because I really could not see it cleary. Silhouettes wrestling in a dark sewer is not really visually stimulating. I guess they couldn't open up the images more in the color correct session during post production. The fight scenes are badly lit and are hurt even further with quick, tight, shots that have shakey camera work. Don't get excited about seeing The Predators homeworld. It is nothing more than a brief pan shot. What a letdown!!!!! The actors are B grade at best and bring nothing new to the cliche characters. In my opinion put a fork in the AvP franchise because it seems done. Don't waste your time on this movie. ALIEN VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM is your typical monsters-on-the-loose movie. Back a million years ago, everyone wanted to see Dracula vs. Frankenstein, Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman, etc. Well, AVP is just the modern version of these silly match-ups. In such films, plot is secondary at best, as the whole reason for making / watching them is to see a monster smack-down. Remember Freddy vs. Jason? Was the storyline all that important, or was it just an excuse to get these two horror icons together? Hmmm. AVP:R wasn't comletely awful, although it was way too dark (and I don't mean sinister). I had a hard time following it during much of the action, due to the lack of decent lighting. This was pretty frustrating! I did not like the idea of the babies getting eaten, but at least it was only implied! As for the pregnant lady, it was gross, though it did fit the idea of making the "predalien" utterly reprehensible and worthy of extermination. The human "heroes" were generic, monster-fodder. What else could they be? Let's face it, in a movie like this, it's all about the critters killing each other anyway! In that respect, AVP: R isn't bad. I just wish I could have seen more of it!... First off I have to say, I'm a fan of both franchises and of the first AVP film. Very enjoyable and easy to watch. However, take what you love about the Alien and Predator franchises, and cover it all three shades darker than what you want and you have this film. Visually the cuts are so quick, and the action scenes so darkly lit it's a little hard to follow. The Predator effects are amazing, the music and sound reminded me of the 1st Predator film. However, the no name cast didnt hold my attention, and they don't make me want to root for them. The predator in this film seems like a damage control specialist, covering up the alien bodies and cleaning as he goes. He's no hero, he still knocks the snot out of the humans that get in his way. So, the idea is engaging, but there is alot of time spent with the towns folk. The rest of the time soaks the same towns folk in pouring rain and horrific blood splatter. Even the original Alien films implied more than they ever showed. Which is always a better way to go. Not hiding anything leaves nothing to the imagination. The Predator homeworld scenes are pretty cool, but its a short little bit at the beginning. Look for the ending to leave you disappointed. I did like that the Yutani corporation is finally brought up. In 1986 Director James Cameron made the first sequel to Ridley Scott's 1979 classic Alien...and Cameron's sequel Aliens was even better than the original (and appears on my Amazon Listmania list of Flicks Guaranteed to Leave a Permanent Impression). In all there were 4 Alien movies. Then in 1987 Jon McTiernan made one of the best movies ever with Arnold Schwarzenegger called Predator. In 1990 a fair at best Predator sequel followed, but gave us our first teaser glimpse of a possible Alien versus Predator movie in the form of an Alien's skull in a Predator's trophy case. In 1989 Dark Horse originally merged the two franchises into a comic book, and in the 90s the video game industry took a bunch of stabs at Alien versus Predator action games. We finally got the first Alien Vs. Predator feature film in 2004 from Paul Anderson, a video game to movie specialist. And it wasn't *that* bad. It's major flaw came at the end when a mutated Alien hatched from a Predator. Why flawed you say? Because the parasitic Alien race was unique by planting its eggs within a host, but it didn't mean that the Aliens took on the attributes of the host, right? Strangely, it is this flawed concept that visual effects masters turned directors The Strause Brothers latched onto and built a movie around with AVP: Requiem. But the flaws don't end there with AVP: Requiem. There are flaws o'plenty, technical and theatrical. The acting is horrible and the film uses recycled line after line from the Alien and Predator films that preceded it. AVP: Requiem's story starts out pretty good, but quickly falls apart. There are story continuity issues (like the miraculously short time between human "infection" and swarms of Aliens appearing), and a there's a cast that seems like the rejects from some failed WB TV show that just can't pull off any semblance of believability in their performances. AVP: Requiem's worst fault is that it is dark and you can hardly see the action. What James Cameron did in Aliens was awesome; he gave you an in your face, up close look at the creatures that in the 1979 original were mostly hidden in the shadows. The Strause Brothers once again latched on to the wrong concept; instead of taking Cameron's lead and showing us the creatures, they took the 1979 idea of darkness and put us in *advanced* darkness. What's the point of a Blu Ray disc if you can't see anything??? AVP: Requiem fails miserably where Cameron excelled...Cameron gave you a movie that you could *watch*...The Strause Brothers gave us one we can't...for more reasons than just the darkness. For those who found 2004'sAliens vs. Predatortoo lightweight in the gore-and-guns department,Aliens vs. Predator: Requiemoffers a marked improvement in both categories, as well as a respectable amount of rumbles between the title extraterrestrials. Set in the 21st century (which predates the story to all of theAlienfeatures),Requiemsends a crippled Predator ship crashing to Earth in a small Colorado town; unbeknownst to the locals, the craft is loaded with H.R. Giger's insectoid monsters, which make quick work of most of the population. As the human cast is slowly whittled to a few hardy (if unmemorable) souls, a Predator warrior also arrives to complicate matters and do battle with the Aliens, as well as a ferocious alien-Predator hybrid (dubbed a Predalien by the sci-fi and horror press). Visual-effects designers and music-video helmers The Strause Brothers (who make their feature directorial debut here) keep the action on frantic throughout, which is wise, since the dialogue and characters are threadbare at best; that should matter little to teenage male viewers, who are inarguably the film's key audience. Fans of theAlienfranchise, however, may find the offhanded nod to the series' mythology given during the finale its sole saving grace. --Paul Gaita
Packed with adrenaline-pumping action and heart-stopping suspense, this spectacular sequel escalates the war between sci-fi's scariest movie icons! On Earth everyone can hear you scream, especially when a horrifying PredAlien crash-lands near a small Colorado town, killing everyone it encounters-and producing countless Alien offspring-with terrifying efficiency. When a lone Predator arrives to "clean up" the infestation, it's an all-out battle to the death with no rules, no mercy, and hundreds of innocent people caught in the crossfire. As the creature carnage continues, a handful of human survivors attempt a daring escape, but the U.S. government may be hatching a deadly plan of its own... He is a huge fan and this is perfect for any Alien fan. It has the different versions of each Alien movie and other extras. I had never seen any of the Alien movies until buying this (I guess I've been living in a cave) and I must say that they are good. I recommend this set for anyone who is a fan because they will not be disappointed. This is the best dvd deal I've ever gotten. If u are a fan of alien(s) and don't own this, u are wrong! Anything you ever wanted to know about these films is included in the hours upon hours of extras. The film quality is great too. I feel no need to buy it on blu-ray if it is ever released (it will cost alot anyways). BUY THIS NOW! This product is awesome if you're into the Alien movies. The director cuts add to the suspense of the storylines. The price was unbeatable and delivery was earlier than stated. A must-have for true fans! Thank you so much for selling this boxset ...it was amazing and in great condition(New) I had been looking at this set for a while but didn't want to spend 60.00 to 70.00 $ for it. I found it on Amazon for half that and it was well worth the money. So many extra features on the history of these movies and how some of the effects were done. I had forgotten how good "Alien" was, not having seen it for a few years, and it was ever better than I remembered. If you look for this at Best Buy, Target or even Walmart, you'll spend at least 60.00$. The accordion type case holding the DVDs is a little difficult to handle because there are so many disks, but that's about the only drawback to the set. You won't be sorry if you buy this. Terrific collection. TheAlien Quadrilogyis a nine-disc boxed set devoted to the fourAlienfilms. Although previously available on DVD as theAlien Legacy, here they have been repackaged with vastly more extras and with upgraded sound and picture. For anyone who hasn't been in hypersleep for the last 25 years, this series needs no introduction, though for the first time each film now comes in both original and "special edition" form. Alien(1979) was so perfect it didn't need fixing, and Ridley Scott's 2003 director's cut is fiddling for the sake of fiddling. Watch it once, then return to the majestic, perfectly paced original. Conversely, the special edition of James Cameron'sAliens(1986) is the definitive version, though it's nice to finally have the theatrical cut on DVD for comparison. Most interesting is the alternativeAlien 3(1992). This isn't a "director's cut"--David Fincher refused to have any involvement with this release--but a 1991 work-print that runs 29 minutes longer than the theatrical version, and has now been restored, remastered, and finished off with (unfortunately) cheap new CGI. Still, it's truly fascinating, offering a different insight into a flawed masterpiece. The expanded opening is visually breathtaking, the central firestorm is much longer, and a subplot involving Paul McGann's character adds considerable depth to story. The ending is also subtly but significantly different.Alien: Resurrection(1997) always was a mess with a handful of brilliant scenes, and the special edition just makes it eight minutes longer. TheAlien Quadrilogyoffers the first and fourth films with DTS soundtracks, the others having still fine Dolby Digital 5.1 presentation. All four films sound fantastic, with much low-level detail revealed for the first time. Each is anamorphically enhanced at the correct original aspect ratio, and the prints and transfers are superlative. Every film offers a commentary track that lends insight into the creative process--though the Scott-only commentary and isolated music score from the firstAlienDVD release are missing here. Each movie is complemented by a separate disc packed with hours of seriously detailed documentaries (all presented in full-screen with clips letterboxed), thousands of photos, production stills, and storyboards, giving a level of inside information for the dedicated buff only surpassed by theLord of the Ringsextended DVD sets. A ninth DVD compiles miscellaneous material, including an hourlong documentary and even all the extras from the oldAlienlaserdisc. "Exhaustive" hardly beings to describe theAlien Quadrilogy, a set that establishes the new DVD benchmark for retrospective releases and looks unlikely to be surpassed for some time.--Gary S. I've been a horror movie fan for years, and movies like It and Sleepwalkers scared the bejesus out of me. But it seems that over time, the horror movie genre has either gotten more stale by the second, or I've just seen so many that I'm jaded as hell. The Mist REALLY lived up to my expectations of good horror. The first thing that made me like it was there was NO SEX ANYWHERE in this movie! Hollywood has gotten it in it's head that sex sells a movie, but everytime I've ever watched a movie with copius amounts of grunge in it (take the newer dawn of the dead movie, for example) with friends, we all just cringe. This movie had NONE of that. It also spared us the obligatory big boobed blonde chick running up a set of stairs or hiding in the closet. That was my first yay. After that, it only continued to get better. The entire movie enthralls you as you watch the disintegrating social structure when so many people ar eput together. I felt this was highly true to human nature. The monsters were the glam of the movie, sure, but the real horror was in watching the people. With the zealot going off, and what happened to several of the characters ( namely the soldier later on) was absolutely terrifying for me to watch. I haven't been this enthralled with a movie since I was young. I didn't want to get up to pee it was that good. The whole movie, the mist, coupled with Dead Can Dance's song " Host of Serephim" just made for a haunting, frightening world in which these characters had to live through. The ending goes without saying. I prayed for " not another it's a dream" ending, and this movie delivered. My husband and I were SO HORRIFIED by the ending we could hardly beleive they allowed it to be produced-but the ending was the biggest horror of all, and threw me for such a loop there was no way I could call it conventional, or even expected. I was blindsided by this leap from normal Hollywood endings, and that thrilled me. Five stars. This movie kicked major tail. Even my husband liked this one, and he's not a fan of horror movies. We both enjoyed/were disturbed by the movie. Horror is my favorite genre, and my husband's least favorite. I like horror because it's a short getaway from reality, but this movie isn't strictly horror. There are many psychological aspects in this movie, and those are close enough to reality to make it a little disturbing. Yes, there are "monsters in the mist" in the movie. The monsters are the fun part. The disturbing, and very thought-provoking, part was normal society completely breaking down in the wake of a catastrophe. Perhaps Mr. King was trying to make a point there. Even if he wasn't, it gave me and my husband a lively topic of conversation. I'd highly recommend this movie to any fans of horror or psychological thrillers. The Good: Awesome (and I do no use that term lightly) special effects. The monsters in this film were designed by the great Bernie Wrightson, and they are terrifying, diverse and original. The effects were created with a combination of CGI AND models using stop-action animation, and they are really jaw-dropping. This combo of techniques raises the effects above the weightless CGI clutter seen in most films. This is one of the few films about which I can honestly say is worth watching for the special effects and the monsters. The Bad: All the bad that is inherent in Stephen King's novels - meaning cardboard characters and glaringly writerly dialogue; all which serve as a platform Mr. King's childish politics. The characters always feel like "types" and the dialogue he gives them always feels like sudden speeches out of the blue. Nothing ever, ever feels real or natural. With King, folks are very bad (meaning conservative or religious) or very good (meaning liberal and vaguely undeclared religiously). His heroes are always full of jibes and speeches contemptuous of politics, the "govment," and any remotely organized religion. His villains are always quoting the Bible (usually from the Book of Revelations), work for the United States Government/Military, or are intolerant rural (always rural) racists. He also likes to throw in a "strong, independent woman", usually middle aged, completely non-sexual, with a heavy, Maine/northeastern accent, in every novel for good measure. The Ugly: Without giving up the end, suffice to say it is an ending done by a filmmaker determined at any cost to have a shocking ending. I dislike a tacked-on happy ending as much as the next person, and so much of king is soaked in sugar, but this film's conclusion is ugly just for the sake of ugliness. So ugly, in fact, it left me wondering if perhaps the filmmaker was telling us the "crazy" zealot was right all along: perhaps the mist really is a God wrought punishment, and God really is the vengeful Old Testament God, pointing his bloody finger at, well, who exactly? The brave and the liberal? A confused, cheap-shot ending, to say the least. Recommended for the monsters (who seem better scripted than the humans) and nothing else. --Mykal Banta Post-script: It seems the near fatal auto accident that Mr. King suffered seems to have completely upset him in some troublesome ways. The author now finds it perfectly acceptable to have his "good guys" shoot those characters he doesn't like in the face, at close range, in cold blood. There is, of course, the obligitory explainations of "having no choice," but this is nonsense. None of Stephen King's heros seems to understand the concept of a warning or wounding shot, which in the situation depicted in the film would have had devastating effect. Perhaps this was a filmmaker's addition, but none the less, post-accident King seems to revel in ugly brutality in ways pre-accident King would not have. Has the Liberal King become so bankrupt of ideas that killing is the only solution? When I first read "The Mist" 20+ years ago, I was struck by how visual the story was. Unlike many of King's stories, which unfold primarily in the characters' heads, "The Mist" was just a straight-forward monster story, which would make an excellent movie. "The Mist" is an excellent movie, with some sequences (ex. the loading dock, the trip to the pharmacy, etc) being just as I imagined them. My only complaint is the tacked-on ending. I highly recommend to stop watching the film where the original story ends. Those who've read the story will know when this moment comes. I couldn't decide if the subsequent events of the tacked-on ending were meant to be Biblical (essential to the story dramatic tension), "O.Henry"-style twists or just a reluctance on the filmmaker's part to trust the original ending. It dragged on so long, I became fearful that it was going to be an "It was all a bad dream" cop-out ending. I hope that any "special editions" of the movie in the future will exise this wholly unnecessary section and give "The Mist" the original ambivalent ending it deserves. This was very different from what we are used to seeing. With that said, it was highly entertaining! The special effects were good, however it is important that they don't overshadow the story - and in this case they didn't. You could feel the tense emotion and the terrible situation the characters were in - I was wound up like a spring watching this movie and the ending. . . Think how hard it would be to be in a situation like that and to try and figure out the best way to survive - wish there could have been a diffent ending but still a GREAT MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MIST THE: 2-DISC COLLECTOR'S EDITION (DVD MOVIE) Writer-director Frank Darabont, who showcased the softer side of Stephen King in his film adaptations ofThe Shawshank RedemptionandThe Green Mile, turns to darker material forThe Mist, his latest King adaptation about a group of ordinary townspeople trapped in a supermarket by a mysterious fogbank. Thomas Jane is top-billed as a Maine illustrator who attempts to calm the frightened shoppers, but his job is cut out for him from the get-go, first by the discovery of malevolent creatures lurking in the mist, and then by the mad mutterings of Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden), a local eccentric who calls for Old Testament-style sacrifices to appease the supernatural forces. Darabont delivers monster movie thrills and understated social commentary with equal skill, and he's well supported by his cast (which includes Andre Braugher, Toby Jones, William Sadler and Jeffrey DeMunn) and the vivid special effects by KNB EFX, which effectively mix CGI with models and stop-motion animation (the terrific monsters were designed by legendary comic book artist Bernie Wrightson). And for those curious about how the novella's downbeat ending has translated to film, suffice it to say that Darabont's conclusion is at once different and more unsettling than King's.--Paul Gaita Rerations < The Mist (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) > < I Am Legend (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition with Digital Copy) > < 30 Days of Night > < Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition) > < Cloverfield > freaks < Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Collector's Set (40 discs) > < Angel - Seasons 1-5 30-Disc DVD Set > < Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, Volume 1: The Long Way Home > < Angel - Seasons 1-5 > < The X-Files: The Complete Collector's Edition > < Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Once More, with Feeling > price:20th Century Fox(2006-08-01) Usually ships in 24 hours customer 's review (Complete and Compact) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Just Awesome!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (One of the best) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (A much beloved television Classic) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Classic!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I love this show and am so glad that there is this boxed set that has all of the seasons and is compact. I don't know if it is worth buying if you already have all 7 seasons as the only feature, other than space saving, is a DVD with some extra bonus material. The only thing that I would change is that after the first 2 (or 3) seasons they stopped indicating which episodes had commentaries. So I find that I have to go through the DVDs one at a time to search for the bonus material. The next time I watch it from the start I will write down which ones have commentaries, but it would be nice if the job was done for me. I am a Buffy fanatic and have been craving Buffy since it went off the air. This product is perfect for me. All episodes on 40 discs, extras, commentary, its just perfect. A must have for those who love Buffy. No series is perfect. They all fall prey to bad episodes/storylines, new characters that quickly lose their usefulness once their original purpose is fulfilled (Riley) or loss of core characters (Angel, Cordy). Buffy was no different. What made it so extrordinary however was the fact that when it did fall prey to these things, it bounced back. Season One, even though it was perfect&couldn't have been better, wasn't even the best which told you a lot about BTVS. It set the tone&explained the rules perfectly&The Master was a great villian. Season Two raised the bar so high however, introducing Spike&Dru while turning Angelius into the perfect villian, Buffy never reached that level again. Season Three was about change and, true to life, change was an uncomfortable experience. I thought it peaked with "Lovers Walk"&was uneven the rest of the way. The Mayor, while interesting, didn't keep me on edge like most of the Big Bads&I was sad to see Xander&Cordy break-up. The last three episodes were great though, especially "The Prom". Season Four seemed to be more even keel&was interesting with the supernatural vs science theme but it lacked the energy that infused the first 3 seasons. The addition of Spike&Tara was great for the show&Adam was a cool villian. Season Five saw BTVS back in top form almost from the opening bell&the energy return. The `big picture' feel was back too with the mystery of Dawn&Glory. Spike became the character a lot of fans wanted him to be&Anya seemed more at home. "The Gift" was my favorite finale. Season Six showed signs of being BTVS's most intense season ever with Buffy`s return&her relationship with Spike&Willow`s addiction. From "Doublemeat Palace" onward however, it went downhill. The Trio quickly became a liability&the manifestation of Willow's addiction could've been handled better (I liked Tara). Season Seven was massive in scope&intense. The First was the perfect Big Bad for the finale; pure evil, pure genius, pure power. I loved The Potentials&the end of The Council. And the ending was pure Joss Whedon genius. God, I miss this show. I'm ashamed to admit that I lost track of Buffy after the end of the fifth season. I regret that, as the 6th and 7th seasons sent the characters in interesting new directions. The Season Overview on the DVDs were particularly helpful in reevaluating my negative opinion. Once I understood where Joss and the writers were going, I was able to sit back and finally enjoy the episodes for what they were. Overall, Buffy The Vampire Slayer is the story of a young person's journey from their awkward teenage years to the cusp of young adulthood. Seeing Buffy's transformation from an ebullient uncertain teen to a strong and confident leader is incredible viewing. And the journey of the other characters (Willow and Xander in particular) is no less affecting. This new package is a complete collection of all the previously released Buffy DVD Boxsets. The only new addition is an extra DVD disc featuring new documentaries about different aspects of the series. My favourite is the retrospective from Cast and crew members. It's great to see that they still have such fond memories of the show that they put so much time, hard work and commitment into. It's great to look back on Buffy over half-a-decade after it ended. Considering mass entertainment's tendency to gravitate towards mediocrity, it's a miracle this show ended up on television at all. It's also a miracle that Joss was able to sheperd the show all the way to its conclusion. Particularly after the experiences of Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) and Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls). Buffy is (and remains) one of my favourite TV series. And the show is just as relevant today as it was back then. "Buffy" is a classic and a must-have - it doesn't get any better than this! All episodes in one box plus plenty of extras is definitely worth the hundred bucks. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes Sci-Fi, Fantasy or just plain old fighting. :) From its charming and angst-ridden first season to the darker, apocalyptic final one,Buffy the Vampire Slayersucceeds on many levels, and in a fresher and more authentic way than the shows that came before or after it. How lucky, then, that with the release of its boxed set of seasons 1-7, you can have the estimable pleasure of watching a near-decade ofBuffyin any order you choose. (And we have some ideas about how that should be done.) First: rest assured that there's no shame in coming toBuffylate, even if you initially turned your nose up at the winsome Sarah Michelle Gellar kicking the hell out of vampires (inBuffy-lingo, vamps), demons, and other evil-doers. Perhaps you did so because, well, it looked sort of science-fiction-like with all that monster latex. Start with season 3 and see that Buffy offers something for everyone, and the sooner you succumb to it, the quicker you'll appreciate how textured and riveting a drama it is. Why season 3? Because it offers you a winning cast of characters who have fallen from innocence: their hearts have been broken, their egos trampled in typically vicious high-school style, and as a result, they've begun to realize how fallible they are. As much as they try, there are always more monsters, or a bigger evil. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the core crew remains something of a unit--there's the smart girl, Willow (Alyson Hannigan) who dreams of saving the day by downloading the plans to City Hall's sewer tunnels and mapping a route to safety. There are the ne'r do wells--the vampire Spike (James Marsters), who both clashes with and aspires to love Buffy; the tortured and torturing Angel (David Boreanz); the pretty, popular girl with an empty heart (Charisma Carpenter); and the teenage everyman, Xander (Nicholas Brendon). Then there's Buffy herself, who in the course of seven seasons morphs from a sarcastic teenager in a minidress to a heroine whose tragic flaw is an abiding desire to be a "normal" girl. On a lesser note, with the boxed set you can watch the fashion transformation of Buffy from mall rat to Prada-wearing, kickboxing diva with enviable highlights. (There was the unfortunate bob of season 2, but it's a forgivable lapse.) At least the storyline merits the transformations: every time Buffy has to end a relationship she cuts her hair, shedding both the pain and her vulnerability. In addition to the well-wrought teenage emotional landscape,Buffydeftly takes on more universal themes--power, politics, death, morality--as the series matures in seasons 4-6. And apart from a few missteps that haven't aged particularly well ("I Robot" in season 1 comes to mind), most episodes feel as harrowing and as richly drawn as they did at first viewing. That's about as much as you can ask for any form of entertainment: that it offer an escape from the viewer's workaday world and entry into one in which the heroine (ideally one with leather pants) overcomes demons far more troubling than one's own.--Megan Halverson *Seasons 1-7 on each disc Bonus Disc: **Introduction by Joss Whedon **Back to the Hellmouth: A Conversation with Creators and Cast **Breaking Barriers: It's Not a Chick Fight Thing **Love Bites: Relationships in the Buffyverse **Evil Fiends **Buffy: An Unlikely Role Model **Buffy Cast and Crew: Favorite Episodes Rerations < Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Collector's Set (40 discs) > < Angel - Seasons 1-5 30-Disc DVD Set > < Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, Volume 1: The Long Way Home > < Angel - Seasons 1-5 > < The X-Files: The Complete Collector's Edition > freaks < Predator [Blu-ray] > < Predator 2 (Two-Disc Special Edition) > < The Terminator [Blu-ray] > < Terminator 2: Judgment Day [Blu-ray] > < Commando [Blu-ray] > < Alien vs. Predator [Blu-ray] > price:20th Century Fox(2008-04-15) Usually ships in 24 hours customer 's review (Awful Blu-Ray Release of a Classic Film) ![]() (Blu-Ray Review) ![]() (Predator) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Fox blows it on Blu-Ray again) ![]() (Wait for a better release.) ![]() ![]() ![]() Let me start off by saying Predator is one of my all time favorite movies. Like other reviewers, the one star is for the Blu-Ray release, not the movie itself. The standard DVD looks better than this! The picture quality on this Blu-Ray is garbage and there are no extras other than a trailer. Don't waste your money on this! Terrible Blu-Ray picture. Nothing at all Blu-Ray about this and also No Special Features!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a joke and a waste by FOX................... THIS MOVIES JUST AS GOOD TODAY AS IT WAS WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT, AND NOW THANKS TO HIGH DEFINITION IT LOOKS AND SOUND BETTER THEN EVER! :) My 1-star review is not for the movie, Predator, which I love. I bought it twice on DVD: the first single-disc release with no extras, and then the excellent 2-disc special edition. I am not going to be buying on Blu-Ray, however, until the chowder-heads over at Fox start including all of the ALREADY PRODUCED extras on their Blu-Ray discs. Case in point: Predator. Predator on Blu-Ray features a higher definition transfer (though on a single layer disc), but carries over none of the special features from the 2-disc DVD. How hard would this have been? Make it a dual layer Blu-Ray, and just throw them all on there in standard definition. That would have guaranteed and instant buy for me. But this habit of dumping the film bare-bones onto Blu-Ray is reminiscent of the early days of DVD, and I thought we were past that. Other studios are doing a fine job of including all the special features, so why is Fox being dumb? And why are they slapping a $40 MSRP on a bare-bones release? You would have had me with a good release, Fox. I would gladly plonk down the cash for a true upgrade from my DVD version. But you blew it, and you're not getting my money. While the movie itself is a pretty good action sci-fi flick that has a not-so-subtle commentary on the 80's action hero phenomenon, this disk is not. You get no extra features for one. Another thing to consider is the movie on this disk is going to be grainy. That's not a fault of the transfer so much, though the movie is encoded in mpeg2. The movie was filmed in the Super 35 (grainy format) using Kodak film (that was also grainy). Aside from color separation the difference in resolution won't be that big. Still it's likely the best looking transfer you will ever see for Predator. Now I've been getting different reports on the audio. Amazon is saying all you get is English 5.1 DTS-HD (lossless audio), but I have been getting reports the disk will also have English Dolby Digital 4.0, French Dolby Stereo and Spanish Dolby Mono. I'm also getting conflicting reports on subtitles where Amazon is saying English and Spanish subtitles while I hear you will also get English SDH, Korean and Chinese. With all these misreports it makes me wonder if there is another release on the horizon. Either way I would wait for and get the mess of extras that came on the Special Edition DVD instead of the single disk with just the grainy movie. That's right. All you get is a theatrical trailer on this release and the fact the disk is D-Box ready (that's a motion control system installed inside a chair so it moves and shakes to events in a movie or video game... don't see many people having this in their living rooms). Verdict? I say wait. They WILL release a blu-ray version with a score of extras if for no other reason than the fact they already made one on DVD. RambomeetsAlienin this terrific science-fiction thriller from 1987, directed by John McTiernan just a year beforeDie Hardmade him Hollywood's most sought-after director of action-packed blockbusters. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of U.S. Army commandos to a remote region of South American jungle, where they've been assigned to search for South American officials who've been kidnapped by terrorists. Instead they find a bunch of skinned corpses hanging from the trees and realize that they're now facing a mysterious and much deadlier threat. As the squad is picked off one by one, Arnold finds himself pitted against a hideous alien creature that's heavily armed and wearing a spacesuit enabling the creature to render itself invisible. The title says it all in describing the relentless, escalating action that follows, maintained by McTiernan with an abundance of visual flair. The film's special effects are still impressive, and stunning locations in the Mexican jungles create a combined atmosphere of verdant beauty and imminent danger. The plot doesn't hold up to much scrutiny, but the movie's so exciting and tightly paced that its weaknesses seem irrelevant.--Jeff Shannon The ultimate hunter meets the ultimate adversary... in the ultimate Collector's Edition DVD! It would make the Red Cross come running with a quickness. It is an adaption and i havent read it personally. I feel the movie is fairly well paced and the action doesnt really let up except for setting up the next scene or way to go for the main characters and those that choose to follow them. They are in a town that just had its last day of sunlight as the name suggests they are in for 30 straight days of nothing but night. Making it a perfect place for the resident blood suckers to salivate and pile up a body count of crazy proportions. They come in slowly and basically start picking off the townsfolk. The sheriff played by Josh Hartnett, his wife played by Melissa George..i believe they are seperated. His brother and a few other people have to band together to try and make it through this onslaught. While being hunted by the vampires and basically trying to stay alive while scavenging for food and shelter. The movie seems have been done well as the characters make it believable and are determined to survive this despite all odds. Also the sets and everything are pretty cool along with the snow effects and of course the main reason. I was interested the vampires and the violence are in great abundance throughout and keep your attention until the very end where. It left we wondering why a certain character did what they did. Solid movie, 30 Days of Night very rent worthy. Barrow, a small Alaskan town experiences 30 days of darkness once a year. During this time, most residents leave for parts unknown, but some stay. With the appearance of a stranger in town (demanding raw meat), and darkness fast approaching, there is foreshadowing of very bad things to come. It soon becomes clearly evident that this small town is in deep trouble when the brave and dedicated Sheriff (played by Josh Hartnett) finds a hole filled with burned cell phones and the mutilated bodies of several snow dogs. While he struggles to discover the truth, he also has to deal with the fact that his estranged wife is stranded in town (after missing her flight), and that several people are dependant on him for their survival. As the death count increases, the remaining survivors band together to defeat the evil (seemingly crazed vampires) feeding on their town. With a secret language of their own, scary teeth and a very determined leader, the vampires intend to feed on everyone and everything in town before burning it to the ground. All the remaining citizens have to do is survive for 30 days in a town with no contact from the outside world, darkness, cold and several crazed vampires using every trick in the book to get them to surrender. What I did like about the movie was the imagery (snow, dark and dreary), the anticipation of daylight returning (I loved the whole daily countdown), and the looming presence of evil. And the final few moments of the movie were absolutely breathtaking. On the other hand, there were two things that I did not enjoy about the movie...namely, the slow moving build-up to the showdown and poor character development. For example, the methodical creation of anticipation at times took away from the overall flow of the movie. And because of the lack of character development concerning the additional survivors (having been told briefly about the Sheriff's troubled marriage, and seeing the son taking care of his Alzheimer suffering father) we never got to really know them and therefore did not really care about their fate. With all that said, I will say that this movie was definitely not the worse vampire flick that I have ever seen, it just could have been better. What a great concept we have here, vampires invading an Alaskan town that has 30 days of darkness, brilliant. This comic adaptation was pulled off very nicely, I was expecting Hollywood to simply destroy this great idea but everything seemed to work. The gore level was very good, and I was happy to see the vampires as merely visceral killing machines and not romantic aristocrats. The main complaint I have is the timeline, everything is just kind of glossed over and it's almost as if things take place in one night instead of a month. In that respect everything just seems off but besides that it's a pretty top notch vampire movie and I enjoyed it quite a bit. As a horror movie this movie is actually kind of bad. It's neither scary nor suspenseful. However, as a comic book adaptation, it's a great movie. In fact I'm almost inclined to say that the movie is better than the series it was based on. The movie is based on issues 1-3 and does a great job bringing to life the illustrations in the original comics with the cinematography imitating the original coloring, shading and lighting used in the comics. Also, ironically, I think as an actor, Josh Hartnett gives the best performance of his career. If you are a fan of comic books and are mildly unimpressed with the recent movie adaptations, this movie is for you. But if you are a horror fan especially of the vampire genre, you may be dissappointed I'm not above enjoying a shallow plot with lots of action. I don't come to a vampire movie expecting an intellectual discourse. I do, however, need to be able to suspend disbelief long enough to care--even on a superficial level--about the welfare of the characters. "30 Days of Night" starts off with stark beauty, haunting music, and an eerie setting. We're quickly introduced to the estranged couple, Stella and Eben. We also get hints of the destruction to come, at the expense of some sled dogs. I was all set to kick back, grip my armrests, and get swept into a harrowing tale. On a number of levels, the movie works. The photography is crisp, yet muted, and the acting is along the same lines. The vampires are given their own language, which adds an interesting dimension that is sadly not explored more. Soon, though, the film's implausibilities begin to add up to the point of distraction. After the initial setup of the town facing a month of darkness and vampire attacks, we find ourselves stuck in an attic with a band of survivors. Not only do they brazenly use a light, but they also clomp around in boots, and show no great plans for things as simple as going to the bathroom. They try to relocate, walking down the middle of the street. Later, with the amount of carnage they witnessed early on, they seem surprisingly unwilling to do what it takes to live another sunless day. The vampires, on the other hand, seem equally inept. Though they can smell blood, they are curiously unable to detect humans in a barren landscape unless it advances the plot. I wanted to like the film, and I found it mildly entertaining. It had the potential for more, and instead resorted to cliches of the genre instead of exploring new territory. While that may be satisfying to some horror fans, it only left me unfeeling in my response. Maybe that was the point. Maybe, in feeling nothing at the end, viewers are meant to become like the very creatures the movie so shallowly portrays. If this was a Simon Pegg film, I might see some social commentary or irony in that. Unfortunately, I think it's only commentary on a run-of-the-mill plot. Josh Harnett (Black Dahlia Pearl Harbor) crosses over to the dark side in this bone-chilling adaptation of the cult-hit graphic novel brought to the screen in all its demonic glory. In a small Alaskan town thirty days of night is a natural phenomenon. Very few outsiders visit until a band of bloodthirsty deathly pale vampires mark their arrival by savagely attacking sled dogs. But soon they find there are much more satisfying thirst-quenchers about: human beings. One by one the townspeople succumb to a living nightmare but a small group survives at least for now. The vampires use the dark to their advantage and surviving this cold hell is a game of cat and mouse and screams.System Requirements:Run Time: 113 Mins.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: HORROR/PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER Rating: R UPC: 043396196155 Manufacturer No: 19615 David (Hard Candy) Slade directs this nerve-jangling adaptation of the popular graphic novel series about a mob of vampires that overruns a remote Alaskan town in the grip of30 Days of Night. Josh Hartnett and Melissa George are the film's de facto heroes (he's the stoic town sheriff and she's his estranged fire-marshal wife) but the picture's real MVP is Slade's camera (along with cinematographer Jo Willems), which careens across the town's snowy landscape to detail the vampires' horrific assault on its inhabitants, which are quickly pared down to a hardy few. The script, co-written by the source material's creator, Steve Niles, along withPirates of the Caribbean's Stuart Beattie andHard Candy's Brian Nelson), proudly wears its influences on its crimson-stained sleeve (Bram Stoker'sDracula, natch, but alsoSalem's Lot, Night of the Living Dead, and John Carpenter's version ofThe Thing) and boils down the graphic novels to a series of tense and extremely bloody standoffs between Harnett and George's band of survivors and the vaguely Slavic and ferocious bloodsuckers led by Marlow (a feral and frightening Danny Huston). And if the characters seem stock and the finale begs suspension of disbelief, the set pieces leading up to it are sufficiently supercharged with suspense and violence to please most horror fans. Standouts in the supporting cast are Ben Foster as the film's Renfield figure and Mark Boone Junior; the disturbing score by Brian Reitzell also merits a mention.--Paul Gaita Stills from30 Days of Night(click for larger image)
