Interestingly, most of the reviews I have seen make mostly relevant points both pro and con. Nevertheless, I do admit feeling some very tugging emotions during many parts of the movie and not just the romantic interludes between the Grand Duke and his very charming young mistress "Maria Vetsera" played by Catherine Deneuve. There is a sense of real urgency between "Grand Duke Rudolf" played by Omar Sharif and his father "Emperor Franz Josef" played by a convincing James Mason. A "wall" has been built between the two and the Grand Duke makes it clear to his all powerful sulking father that it will be up to him [the Emperor] to remove it. A task perhaps to great for even the all powerful. I find myself wishing for this universal issue between this father and son to be resolved and its possible historic importance only adds to the urgency. OKAY - THERE ARE SOME ODDITIES ABOUT MAYERLING Nevertheless, although there is much good to be said for the movie as a whole, it does contain some very difficult to take flaws. Casting aside, the wardrobe department made itself very obvious in the choice of eyeshadows, blushes and hairdos that are right out of the 1960s. This emphasis on the 1960's howwever only affects the women so they seem a bit out of place when they are seen typically with uniformed high ranking officials whose wardrobe is very accurately right out of antiquity. This is a needless distraction that detracts from the exquisitely time perfect sets that are genuine in most respects. Also, Ava Gardner [Empress Elizabeth] seems out of place and there is a mix of foriegn and English actors that are for better or worse ample and very correctly attired. AH: BUT THE MUSIC BY KHACHATURIAN The entire film is lifted quite a bit by the very appropriate and well timed saturation of Khachaturian's Best Music from the ballet Spartacus. Most of it sounds like variations from the Adagio movement which is one of the most longing and romantic orchestral overtures ever written and very strongly suggestive of the last vestages of the Holy Roman Empire and this doomed romance which is of course the setting for the entire film. ----- * THE CAST --* Omar Sharif - Crown Prince Rudolf Catherine Deneuve - Maria Vetsera James Mason - Emperor Franz Josef Ava Gardner - Empress Elizabeth James Robertson-Justice - Prince Of Wales Genevi?ve Page - Countess Larisch Andr?a Parisy - Princess Stephanie Ivan Desny - Count Josef Hoyos Fabienne Dali - Mizzi Kaspar Veronique Vendell - Lisi Stockau Howard Vernon - Prince Montenuevo Irene von Meyendorf - Countess Stockau ----- * THE PRODUCTION CREW --* Terence Young - Director / Screenwriter Robert Dorfmann - Producer Claude Anet - Book Author Michael Arnold - Book Author Dennis Cannan - Dialogue Writer Joseph Kessel - Screenwriter Henri Al?kan - Cinematographer Francis Lai - Composer (Music Score) Monique Bonnot - Editor Georges Wakh?vitch - Production Designer Maurice Colasson - Art Director Tony Roman - Art Director Marcel Hellman - Executive Producer Marcel Escoffier - Costume Designer Jacques Carrere - Sound/Sound Designer Joseph DeBretagne - Sound/Sound Designer ----- * AWARDS --* Best Foreign Film - English Language (nom) 1969 Golden Globe BOTTOM LINE: Sentimental and very compelling period piece with great personalities brought to the screen by great actors. The tone set by Khachaturian's Spartacus [Adagio Movement] recurs thematically throughout the film and seems just perfect for the bittersweet mood of this tragic romance. James Mason is as handsome as ever. It's a really well worth seeinf film. I highly recommend it. I have been told that the French predecessor of this film is better, but I don't see how. The compelling true story of the downfall of the Hapsburg family is recounted here with an emphasis on the personal tragedy of Prince Rudolph. Here is a man trapped in a loveless marriage, domineered by his tyranical father, deprived of the love of a mother who tries to dazzle everyone, caught in the uprisings of democratic politics, and addicted to cocaine to dismiss his pain. To add to his personal pain, he meets a beautiful, penniless noblewoman, whose family is basically out of favor, and falls hopeless in love. The politics, the personal manipulation, the suffering of the lovers is beautifully presented by MGM in their grand style. Sharif may not be the optimal Rudolph, but who could be immune to Catherine Deneuve's charm. James Mason is a perfect cold and stern Emperor, and Ava Gardner (miscast) fares adequate as the Emperess. It is James Roberton Justice, who plays the Prince of Wales, who steals the movie. His every scene is a joy. The European character actors who fill out the cast do a fine job, and the story unfolds as the tragic love should. Whether you believe that Rudolph killed his mistress and himself, or that his father had the secret police remove him, you will enjoy this movie. Good musical score too! In early 1889, Crown Prince Rudolph, son of Emperor Franz Joseph and heir to the Hapsburg Empire, took his teenage mistress, Baroness Maria Vetsera, to a hunting lodge called "Mayerling." What happened there has been the subject of a good deal of speculation, but the most popular version is this: That sometime in the early morning hours of January 30th, Rudolph killed Maria with a single shot from his revolver, and then, some hours later, took his own life. How they came to this moment in time is the subject of the film, "Mayerling" which stars Omar Sharif as Rudolph and Catherine Deneuve as Maria. The film is highly sympathetic to the lovers, portraying them as kindred souls beset by the prejudices and stupidities of everyone around them. Rudolph's liberal political views and Maria's innocence are made much of, and the idea that they were driven to the desperation of a suicide pact is central to the persuasiveness of this film. Unfortunately I have a hard time buying any of it, and perhaps it's partly because I know too much about the real couple and their situation, but I think it's also because the film is so heavy-handed that we feel more bludgeoned than persuaded. Sharif is wooden as Rudolph, but in all fairness some of the lines he's asked to deliver are almost laughable. The Oedipal subtext between Rudolph and his mother, Elizabeth, has no real purpose beyond titillation, and it is frankly difficult to believe in Deneuve as ingénue. Had all the roles been written with more authenticity the story might well have worked as a tragedy, but Terence Young, who apparently drew on the novels of Claude Anet and Michel Arnold to write the screenplay, has taken the easy route here, complete with cardboard villains and people's heroes. Not even James Mason as Franz Joseph or the ravishing Ava Gardner as Empress Elizabeth can propel this particular film out of the category of Bad Romance. The look of the film owes more to the era in which it was made than that which it seeks to portray. Makeup, hairstyles, even costumes reflect a sixties sensibility which may have put audiences at ease in 1968, but which are jarring today. Frankly, this is one of the things that can really turn me off of a film; I tolerate it in "Doctor Zhivago," but in "Mayerling" it becomes so distracting, that any credibility this film might have had for me goes right out the window whenever I see an actress with overdone, sixties-style eyeliner or lots and lots of hair woven into intricate, sixties-inspired dos. I suggest you give this one a miss unless you're in the mood for some schmaltz. A perfect example of Omar Sharif's brilliant acting, I wish we could see him again in big US produced movies to use his rare talent in new movies instead of losing him again to the Egyptian movie producers. In this movies you can see how much this great man can say just with his eyes to his also incerdible co-star Catherine Deneuve, wonderful movie and beautiful sceneries and acting, a must see. would recomend Doctor Zivago and some of his Egyptian movies . Incredible man. Incredible story. Must see film for Third Reich buffs. This movie may be a bit confusing to someone (like me) who does not know the history of Raoul Wallenberg. However, the movie improves upon a second viewing. Your asking me to review a movie I still have not received. When I get it, I can review it then. Good Evening Mr. Wallenberg has a great premise, but horrible filmmaking. The special effects are cheesy - there's no blood when the people are shot, which is totally bogus. Also, the copy that I received (which is being sold as authentic) is a cheap reproduction of a VHS tape (so it appears). The sound is horrible. The image is pixelated, and it freezes when you try to rewind it. This movie sucks a big doo-doo man! Don't ever, ever, ever in your life compare it to the likes of Steven Spielberg's 'Shindler's List'. Before "Schindler's List" came Grede's engrossing portrait of a man who risked everything to protect others from ignominious slaughter. In the end, he saved thousands, but was himself accorded a different fate. Skarsgard portrays this little-known hero with dignity and gravitas, while Thalbach delivers a fine performance as one of the haunted souls he protects: Marja, a witness to the slaughter of her own children. Grede does not shy from depicting Nazi abominations, and the air of suspense he builds around the discovery of a group of survivors, and the march of the Russian army on Budapest, is unnerving. "Wallenberg" is an unblinking tribute to a remarkable man of action. The story of Raoul Wallenberg, one of the greatest unsung heroes of World War II who saved the lives of tens of thousands of Jews in the Budapest ghetto. She plays Elizabeth Roffe, who inherits her father's pharmaceutical empire following his mysterious death. Facing opposition and downright hostility from the board members (who also happen to be Roffe relations), Elizabeth's own life soon becomes threatened. A boring script and meandering plot are the main factors why BLOODLINE never really catches fire; despite a star-studded international cast which boasts James Mason, Ben Gazzara, Irene Papas, Romy Schneider and Claudia Mori. The sweeping, haunting musical score is provided by Ennio Morricone. Audrey Hepburn bravely leads the charge with an intelligent and sympathetic portrait as Elizabeth; this film was totally unworthy of her talents. Still, for Audrey fans it's worth a look. If you are an Audrey-fan, you must see this film only for the sake of seeing it because you are a fan. Got that? I have to agree with another review , this movie had me thinking when I was a teenager too , I loved audrey hepburn and all the cast in this film , I didnt read the book , maybe I should . But I did love the soundtrack and have recently bought it again and now Im thinking maybe I should buy the film as well. Too bad its not on DVD format . I do miss films like " Bloodline " The snuff part I could have done without , but I also agree the bald man was a hottie . How Sheldon's wonderful novel was turned into such a bad (and very boring) movie is a mystery. Good cast (Hepburn, Mason, Schneider) wasted...Buy the book instead!!! James Mason and Ben Gazarra were still virile and energetic enough to pull it off as two middle-aged adverseries for the eternally charming Audrey Hepburn. Enjoy it for what it is, a straightforward, by-the-numbers suspense thriller with plenty of '70s fashion and atmosphere. The ending, where Hepburn must decide to believe either Mason or Gazarra, is great. Mason's 1978-79 performances in "The Boys from Brazil" and "Salem's Lot" and here made for a notable trifecta of quality acting. I wish more people would see this. Its such a beautiful and subtle film. A film for the ages, and it's so controversial because of A.Laurents' screenplay, a thorough critique of the Romanov Dynasty and monarchy in general in 1956 when everybody was running from McCarthy. Ingrid Bergman is so superb, as is Yul Brynner and Helen Hayes.Waht can you say about the scenes between Ingrid and Brynner and Ingrid with Helen Hayes? They are so brilliant! And the p[hotography, the use of CinemaScope! Akim Tamiroff and Martita Hunt are marvellous too. However, this DVD has major flaws with respect to the transmission of sound. The music overwhelms everyone, and the voices are low and not understandable as aresult of many imbakances. There was the Fox Tape, not LBXd but clear and balanced. What the heck happened? . Keep the LBX tapes from Fox Movie Channel and be content, or, if you can get the Chinese DVD import, get it, beautiful sound and color. This release is sad, to be sure, but the Fox Dvds are very bad, and need to be re -done some day by competent people, by people who love film. Look at The Gang's All Here, for example, and other box sets from Fox, the Tyrone Power one..keep the old tapes. This is such a beautiful film. The colorization is certainly a value-added, but nothing can be better than Yule Brenner and Ingred Birgman with a quiet love that comes to fruition. I am an unabashed romantic, and this DVD is my top ten list. Do NOT fall for the Meg Ryan version! That is animated pap. I love Meg Ryan but this (Yule Brenner and Ingred Bergman) is the only real thing). This movie was a perfect evening in every sense of the word. It's already a great movie but the extras make it greater! Either before viewing or after watching the movie you have the chance to see the Biography channels story on the real Anastasia. I believe this gave me so much more satisfaction because I was able to learn and also to compare it to the fictional story that the movie was. I wont even waste space describing the actors performances except to say ..Magnificant!!!! Absorbing drama of an amnesiac girl who may or may not be the daughter of Czar Nicholas II. The performances are so superb that you or anyone of us are immediately engaged with this tour de force acting. Anatole Livak directed his masterpiece with the talented complicity of Mrs. Ingrid Bergman in her second Academy Award as Best Actress. Kudos for You Brynner who was extraordinary too. Ingrid Bergman gives one of her memorable, haunting, and haunted performances as an amnesiac chosen by a White Russian general (Yul Brynner) in 1928 to play the part of Anastasia, the long-rumored but missing survivor of the Bolsheviks' murderous attack on the czar's family. The twist is that Bergman's mystery woman seems to know more about the lost Anastasia than she is told. Based on the play by Marcelle Maurette and Guy Bolton, this film--directed by Anatole Litvak (Out of the Fog)--really does get under one's skin, not least of all because of its intriguing story but even more because of the strong chemistry between Bergman and Brynner.--Tom Keogh An expatriate White Russian general sets in motion a grand hoax after he meets a destitute woman on the banks of the Seine River in Paris. He is amazed at her resemblance to Anastasia, the youngest daughter of Czar Nicholas of Russia, rumored to have somehow survived the Bolsheviks' execution of the Romanoff family in 1918. He trains her to impersonate the missing princess but soon begins to feel she may be the real Anastasia. Ultimately, the truth can only be decided by one person Anastasia's grandmother, the Dowager Empress. The main love theme, appearing numerous times throughout the score, equals Morricone's main theme to"Once Upon a Time in the West"with it's lush strings and solo female voice. This score is a must for anyone who love's Morrionce's Western film music. The second half of this double bill is the score to"Dark of the Sun"written by French jazz composer Jacques Loussier. Ironically, the music sounds similar in style to Ennio Morricone's"Gangster Thrillers"such as"The Sicilian Clan"or"Violent City"The music is driving and forceful, making a nice match with"Guns for San Sebastian"(Though a second Morricone score would have been more appropriate) The Western genre had been given new life by the mid-1960s success of so-called "Spaghetti Westerns," an oeuvre that also helped break some decades-old musical clichés, thanks largely to the pioneering efforts of the great Ennio Morricone.Guns for San Sebastian, released in 1968, was composed during the same halcyon period as the composer'sOnce Upon a Time in the West. ThoughGunsis a bit more conventional, there are moments that recall its magnificent cousin, especially the title melody and soaring soprano of Edda Dell'Orso on "Love Theme." Jacques Loussier's score for the mercenary adventure taleDark of the Sunis a good companion piece. Though known for his jazz work, Loussier combines those coolly shaded stylings with an inventive, seemingly Morricone-inspired use of rhythm, percussion, and murky orchestral colors to evoke a sense of danger and suspense.--Jerry McCulley < Anastasia: Music From The Soundtrack (1956 Version) > price:Varese Sarabande(1993-07-06) 1.Fox Fanfare - Anastasia - Russian Easter 2.Valse 3.Self-Destruction 4.Who am I-the Troika 5.The Beginning 6.The Tivoli-The Sleeping Princess 7.Anastasia Waltz 8.The Meeting 9.The Wildfeuer Polka 10.Recognition 11.Riberhaus Marsch - Marche de bataille 12.Frustation 13.End Title-Anastasia 14.Anastasia customer 's review (Superb Oscar-nominated Soundtrack score.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Please write me where I can find this CD or record, Thanks) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is one of Alfred Newman's most beautiful and haunting scores and is sadly out of print.
